O.C.T. Novice trip July 24 (Sunday)

Post by Jenny »

Plans are to run the James from Hardware to New Canton boat landing. This section of the James has only mild rapids (class I-II at best) separated by flatwater. Many places to stop and swim. We will meet at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday at the boat landing in New Canton (directions below). Please contact me if you are planning to go.

From Richmond, take Rt. 6 (Patterson Ave.) west. Stay on Rt. 6 until you reach Fork Union, VA. Rt. 6 will merge with Rt. 15 shortly before then. Stay on Rt. 15 after Rt. 6 turns to right in Fork Union. In a few miles, you will come to Rt. 15 bridge over the James. Cross bridge and take first left. Go about 100 yds. to stop sign and turn left. Continue for short distance to New Canton post office and turn left. This road will lead you to boat landing (just after you cross railroad tracks). It takes about 1.5-2 hours to get there from Richmond, depending on where in Richmond you are and how fast you drive. Watch speed in small towns, as the local cops frequently have radar set up.

Hard to say how long we'll be on the river, particularly since we have a number of people who are new to paddling. Length of the trip is about 6.5 miles. Considering the recent heat wave, I anticipate that we'll stop frequently for swim breaks. I would guess late afternoon (maybe around 2 or 3 p.m.?); however, no guarantees except that we will be off the river by dark.
