Help for West Virginia flood victims

Spoke with a nice lady at Volunteer West Virginia. She indicated that we'd have two options for volunteering on Friday, July 22nd.

1. Volunteer for muck out with Team Rubicon. Meet at Nicholas County High School, 30 Grizzly Lane, in Summersville at 7 am for registration. This is an ALL DAY event, so I'd suggest going out on Thursday night. Don't worry, this will still be going on in two weeks time. Phone 681-208-0249.

2. Volunteer at Richwood Family Center for a number of different assignments with a team called Mission Assignments. Richwood Family Center is at 3 Valley Rd in Richwood. These folks have multiple jobs and excursions throughout the day, so if you wanted to drive out Friday morning, you could still get in a half day with these guys. They also indicated they might move to the Richwood National Guard Armory in the interim. Phone 304-846-2773

These two were suggested by Volunteer West Virginia as being somewhat convenient to Hico, and in need of our help. They are working seven days a week, so if it's better for people to volunteer on Saturday or Sunday, that's fine. Make sure to dress appropriately. Long pants, work boots and leather gloves are the uniform of the day. Sunscreen and bug spray strongly recommended.

They both indicated that they have enough donated bleach, clothes, and water, etc, and said that they really need tools such as hammers, crowbars, etc for tear down and rebuild. With that in mind, I'm going to suggest that we, as individuals and a club, make monetary donations. It seems to me that will put the most power for good in the best place. Take your pick of worthy organizations to give money to. I'd suggest the Red Cross.

I've just now donated $100. I challenge you to donate as well. Minimum online donation is $10.

I'll make a decision on when and where I'll volunteer when I have a chance to confer with my boss.

I'll be joining Team Rubicon on Friday, July 22, 7:00 am. Come with me! Please!

We will still need someone to step up to help out at Richwood too.

John, all you have to do is show up. Please post which day you'd like to help. That might help motivate others. Thanks!

It would be helpful for those who plan to volunteer to declare their intentions. That will allow me to inform the organizers how many are coming. I doubt they'll turn anyone away, but they like to know what resources they'll have.

I am "in". I plan to be at Ray's on Thursday night and will go where needed all day Friday. I am a general contractor and so have a tool trailer containing pretty much all you'd need to build a house starting at the top of the masonry. Or, sadly, ... , to tear one back down to the masonry and beyond.

Thanks, y'all!

John, if you'll call Richwood next Thursday evening, you can give them an idea how many folks to expect, and maybe get an idea what they want help with. I'll do the same for those who want to come with Team Rubicon on Friday.

Here's the number I have for Richwood: 304-846-2773. It may change if they move to the armory.

Ken, I called Volunteer West Virginia to find out what tools might be in demand. They need stuff like shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, circular saws, saws-alls, crowbars, etc. Sounded to me like there's more tearing down than building up going on right now. So, bring the trailer for sure.

I've fielded a number of calls and emails asking how people can help if they can't go Friday. The answer is to call Volunteer West Virginia to find out where your schedule and their needs meet. 304-558-0111. I just got off the phone with them, and they seem a little distraught. Their volunteer force is drying up, and they have literally tons of work left to get out from under all the mud and debris. Please call 304-558-0111. They need you whenever and wherever you're willing to help. Thanks!

I've been trying to contact Team Rubicon to find out what kind of tools/gear to bring. Finally got an email from their WV Director last night. Guess what!? They're packing up and going home on Friday. Having been at it since June 27th, I can't really fault them at all. That did leave me in a pickle though.

I called Volunteer West Virginia - again - and they gave me two options for any day.

1. Go to Richwood Armory, 3 Avenue B, Richwood, WV. Opens at 0800 every day. It's OK to just show up, but if you have questions 304-846-2271.

2. Go to Rainelle's old Magic Mart building, 510 Park Center, Rainelle, WV. Opens every day at 0800. Also OK to just show up. 304-808-1872.

SEE YOUS OUT THERE!!!
