Tye River Question!

Post by EHJ22 »

Anyone know much about the Tye River near Charlottesville,Crabtree Falls? Is it runnable right now, any experience on it? Let me know, from reading it sounds like a fun river, I'm just not familiar with it. Thanks!

Tye River levels

Post by David »

I ran it almost three years ago when a tropical system blew through. It was 3000 on the guage Saturday, as much as I would ever want, then had dropped to 700 on Sunday, a good minimum.

This is for the class 3 section from the confluence of the north and south forks down to the Appalachian Trail bridge. The USGS gauge is downstream from this section. The upper forks are class 4-5. Below the Appalachian Trail bridge the Tye mellows out, but still has many fun class 2 rapids. All in all, it is one of Virginia's great streams.

It is a blast and you'll love it. It was high but I don't know the level - I ran it from the church down.

Catch it if you can. It's worth calling in sick.

Ditto on 700 cfs for a minimum. I usually catch it about once a year, it has to rain hard for 2 days to get it up, and then it usually stays up for one day. I have yet to find the link, but another way of checking if it's running that I've heard of is the rain gauge at the Montebello fish hatchery-- 2 inches minimum.

Ran it last year @ 750 cfs. Its a little scrappy but runnable. Everytime it rains in that part of the state i start checking the gauges to see if it has come up. I definitely agree its worth a sick day if you can catch it running.
