O.C.T. January 1 Chilly Chili Paddle & Potluck...
is on and will be good.
I will post details after Christmas weekend but the basic plan is on New Year's Day paddle the upper James from Pony Pasture, downtown James, or both. Then retreat to my house near Pony Pasture for food and more fun.
All Coastals welcome.
It has been a great year for me on the river thanks to so many good river friends. Happy Holidays everybody!

OMG! NYD UJ!
Food, frothy libations and a clothing optional paddle beforehand! Don't know if I can stand the excitement! !!!! Truly a Class (enter your roman numeral here) experience! Noon at Reedy for the upper, check posts for just the lower.
Instant gratification takes too long.
I'll be there for the UJ, LJ, and especially the frosty libations after.
Generally, I think that if I have the opportunity to paddle, and I've got something else to do or I feel like I shouldn't go for some reason, then I force myself to go and I always have a great time. So, I guess when in doubt -- Go, Paddle. -- Tommy Hilleke

I'll be there at least for the UJ run. Long boat on the upper at higher levels sounds like fun. Chili sounds good too.
Daniel says he wants to join me, so we'll be paddling our big red canoe.

Chilly Chili New Years Paddle & Potluck
The plan is for folks who want to run the upper James to meet at 12 noon January 1 at Reedy Creek. Openboater and Kayakah have generously offered to coordinate the trip, so meet them at Reedy. Anyone wanting to run the lower should make arrangements separately or post here if you are willing to coordinate. As of now the prediction is a level of 8 feet. Weather prediction is rain and possibly wintry mix Thursday and rain Friday with a low in mid-20's and high in 40's. Though the upper is mostly a smooth class 2 cruise, I would rate it a 3 for volume, push, and cold, as well as the chance of a level rise. A drysuit is highly recommended. Remember if the level is above 9 feet you are supposed to have a high water permit from the Richmond City Fire Department. It costs $10, comes laminated and is good for two years. The fire station that issues them is on the corner of East Broad Street and 24th Street. Go east on Broad, turn left at 24th and it will be on your left. I got my permit a couple of weeks ago and also got a quick tour of the water rescue apparatus. The firefighter who helped me said whitewater paddlers were not so much an issue, drunken partiers were.
The party and eating will be at my house starting around 2:30 until whenever. I am making lasagna as that is one of the few good recipes in my repertoire. Salad, dessert, of course chili, or whatever including your favorite beverage are things to consider bringing.
I live in the vicinity of Pony Pasture and will be sending all my paddling friends for whom I have emails directions. Send me a PM if need be and I will send you directions.
Some time ago Monster wondered when I was having a house-warming party. It has only taken me this long to get unpacked or stuff stowed away. I am looking forward to seeing my Coastal friends.

about the eating
If you are bringing a salad I have plenty of dressings; blue cheese, light ranch, balsamic vinaigrette, and ginger and sesame.
I started into the large bag of oranges Bill Gordon fixed me up with from his yard. Fresh-squeezed orange juice and it is addictive. I will also buy some bananas and we can make daiquiris. It is the best we can do to keep up with the Costa Rica crowd. Somebody bring rum if you like that in your drink.

Looks like Tom and Gene are leading folks down the Upper James and are planning to meet at Reedy at high noon.
In the previous version of this post I had incorrectly assumed that I would be available to run both the Upper and Lower. I have been notified that I am not available to do so and will therefore only be running the Upper at noon and then to the party.
