beginner trip Monday?
Hi
Is anyone thinking about a Monday trip other than the LJ, suitable for a beginner? My paddling partner is working on getting a combat roll. Upper James (river right) or something similar would be good.
We plan to run the LJ soon, once it runs out of water!
Thanks
Jonathan

Jonathan,
I'm thinking about dragging my roommate out there tomorrow morning. He's questionable, but I'm definitely up for a trip. I would be thinking 10-11-ish for a start?
Let me know if that works for you.

I love the smell of Neoprene in the morning...

Jonathan,
Though I'm not going to be out on Monday, I thought I'd chime in on this one. The Upper James has some great places to practice combat rolling at these levels. Choo-choo rapid, located slightly right of river center just downstream of the railroad trestle below the Powhite bridge, offers a great opportunity to practice rolling in swift water and learning to time rolls in wave trains. There is a large eddy on river right for recovery and instructional time (and usually a good beach for lunch and refreshments).
Put in at Pony Pasture and spend some time working on ferrying, eddy turns, surfing, attaining, etc. To get to Choo-choo, pass under the Powhite bridge (1st one) and head for the middle arch opening (or 1 to the right) in the railroad trestle. Choo-choo is a gentle ledge rapid (II) that drops off to the right with 75yds or so of wave train runout. The rest of the river will be read and run for you, just remember to look toward river right about 1/3 mile past the metal bridge (Nickel bridge) for the "TAKE OUT" sign that leads you down the channel to Reedy Creek.
Have fun!

Generally, I think that if I have the opportunity to paddle, and I've got something else to do or I feel like I shouldn't go for some reason, then I force myself to go and I always have a great time. So, I guess when in doubt -- Go, Paddle. -- Tommy Hilleke
An 11 am start would work for us.
The upper James is a good option as this is not a pfd for either of us, and apparently Choo Choo is a nice spot. I paddled a section of the App at low flow, but since I'm much less familiar with that river I would be uncomfortable leading my wife down it right now. If there is an experienced trip leader on the App it would be OK.
