Lower Gauley 9/29

Let us know how it went! Swim confessions and carnage reports are welcome, but it's not fair to tell on your buddies!

Lower Gauley 9/29

Post by Alicia »

Yes, I'm writing the trip report b/c I swam (below PSH hole - oh, well!). Thanks go to John VanLuik for coordinating the trip & to Dave Bradford for encouraging us to go. Others there were Liz Bradford, Ken Dubel, Scott Wagner, Rich Prado, Bill Hamill, & GK Kinsey. It was a fine day on the river.

Today, Ken & I passed on boating (hard to believe) & took a fantastic hike on Fern Creek Trail to Diamond Point. This is the cliffs on river right below Double Z rapid on the New Gorge. Nice, easy hike w/ awesome views. I've been paddling the New/Gauley for nearly 25 yrs & had never been there. I heartily recommend it to others. It's just off Lansing-Edmond Rd, near the visitor center.

I have NEVER seen The Queen in the water before! It was likely Ken's fault.

I agree. It MUST be Ken's fault. In retrospect, another treat was watching Gromit at Backender. Now we know how the rapid got it's name. My lovely bride can roll up in some pretty gnarly shtuff! That was one of the most enjoyable days I've ever had on the river. We had good weather, ogood company and good water. I particularly liked bombing thru PSH without catching a single eddy. Talk about game on! I'm sure glad we got to go. We'll make a bigger effort to get out there more next year! Thanks to JVL for posting the trip.

Truer words have never been spoken. I accept full responsibility. Serves me right for not announcing Alicia's birthmonth before it started.

Big thanks of course to John VanLuik for organizing the trip on Saturday. We had a little more water than usual, thinking it was pushing 3200. Most of the rapids were fairly similar to what we normally see at 2800. I don't know the run all that well. The beach on the left above lower Mash was mostly underwater and the breaking wave there seemed narrower and further to the right. The left side of Pure Screaming Hell looked a lot different to me.

Most of the restaurants in Fayetteville were packed by the time we got there. We ended up at Dirty Ernie's. It's been awhile. I enjoyed the ribs.

Sunday's hike is worth repeating. I'm working on posting some photos of that.

Great day of paddling. I just gotta figure out how to run backorder. I have yet to be upright at the bottom
And yes, I agree - Ken's fault for the royal swim
Fun!

Hike photos should be viewable here:

I've been having some trouble with linking to these lately though, don't know why.

Ken,

Nice pictures. Thanks for sharing.

I was very impressed with the telephoto shots of the rapids, and the scenery pictures were good too.

The gist is, from the visitor center, head north on 19 and take the 1st right which is Lansing-Edmund Road. 1.3 miles and you are at the trail head. It's popular so parking may be limited. There is another trail head further on L-E but the hike from there is a bit steeper, not sure. Loop hikes can be done.
