Webster Springs Whitewater Festival and Race

Post by Wallace »

It's time to start planning for this event. Its April 5 & 6, 2008 and it's in West Virginia, so the weather is unpredictable. The water temperature is predictable, though. It'll be COLD. That means that you should bring ALL your paddling gear. The race is held on the Elk River above the town of Webster Springs on Saturday. If you want to race, here's a link to the race info. If you don't want to race, there will be lot's of folks paddling the Elk River below Webster Springs. If you're interested in that here's the AW page. Gromit and I paddled this section with Ed Evangelini and some other people from Monacacy and CCC last year. It was fun and very much like the Bloomington section of the N. Branch. Also there are several creeks near by that offer something for everyone. On Sunday we will paddle the section of the Elk above town where the race is held. Dave Kessmann has reserved a cabin at Camp Caesar again this year. The cabin sleeps about 20 people in bunk beds. It also has heat and hot showers and flush toilets! The Camp has a buffet breakfast Sat and Sun morning, and is the site of the after race party where beer and pizza will be served with live music (probably bluegrass). As far as I know, the Mineral Springs Motel is the only other available lodging near by.

Here's the short list of the runs available in the area:

Cherry, Cranberry, Elk, Gauley, Meadow, and Williams

Gromit and I would like to get on one of these on Saturday (assuming the weather and the level are good) and then paddle the Elk above town on Sunday before heading home. Kessmann will have even bigger plans. If you're on the fence, then jump on in. You will enjoy the rivers in the area, I guarantee it.

AW page for WV

Driving Directions (the long way) I think it's quicker to take US Rte 250 West from Staunton into WV, to US Rte 219 South, to WV Rte 15 into Webster Springs as long as the roads are dry.

Please post here if you plan to go. I'd like to know what you're most interested in paddling and where you plan stay.

Ann and I will be in attendance and staying at Mineral Springs. I plan to run the creeky stuff. I'm also planning to cook something via a grill Sat. night, then head over to the festival.

Jules and I will also be attending and staying at Mineral Springs Hotel. I plan to run the creeky stuff as well. Hopefully not backwards. We will be grilling w/the Shaggy family but not attending the festival. I will be visiting my old friends at the hospital instead. I am not staying in the cabin, and no, I don't know why and no I am not hiding anything.

Really.

No, really.

I am going up Friday afternoon and stayin at Caesar's. I am open to paddling anything that's at my ability. It'll be my first time up there so I will look for input once I get there.

Thanks for leading the trip W&G.

Will be cruising up to WV on Friday, hope to stay at Caesars, if there is a bed available and paddle everything I can.

I wear my suspenders and poo kickn' boots

I have a room at the Inn as well, plan to drive up Friday afternoon and run the MAD SIK GANR MANKY stuff. 8)
Envelope – Free stationary taken from the Marriott while on a business trip.
Snowflake address label – sent to me free and had to be used up.
Stained glass stamp – It was more then three feet away from me when I decided to get them so you know I didn’t see them clearly
Butterfly and Sunflower stickers on the back – Also free and required because the glue on the envelope was so old it no longer stuck.

Check out the Elk River below town in my opening post on this topic. If that seems too tame then come with us to one of the III/IV creeks on Saturday. On Sunday we'll run the race course. It's short and fun, so it doesn't overly delay the drive home.

PSUPAC and MattDiamon, where are yous?

Hey Yo!
I'm presently trying to fanagle my work schedule. I am scheduled to work that weekend. Much to my dismay, it's not looking promising that I'll be able to make the trip. Which is making me Angry! (Hey, I can do it too)
When will anyone likely make it out that way again? I'm pissed I'm going to miss those rivers and the good time which will go along with it. I WANT to be there if that makes it any better.
Matt will have to speak for himself.
