OCT - Lower Yough Friday of Summer Gathering (7/26)

Post by JDzielak »

I'm lucky enough to coordinate the subject paddle. Tentative plan is to meet at the grassy knoll at 2:00pm to set shuttle and paddle. No passes are needed for weekdays, however, we will need to get shuttle tokens before we put-on. Please feel free to email with any questions by using the convenient link below. Please post your intentions here so I'll know who to look for. My phone number is 804-thre eight 9 - 66tothree if you need to contact me.

Anyone planning to paddle with us Friday & looking to carpool from Richmond? I'm planning on LY Friday, UY Saturday, and LY Sunday. I'll be camping with the group so don't worry about the UY Saturday since there will be plenty of opportunity for a ride to the river Saturday from the campground. Email me with the link below to coordinate. Planning on leaving my house at 8:30ish Friday morning.

Paddling Friday LY

Post by dkeller »

Looks like 3 hard boaters and 2 in a shredder for now.

Will be my 15 year old son's PFD.

All 3 hard boaters will be SOT (Torrents). Don Keller, Sam Keller, Dave Piatak

I have run it 15+ times at all levels from 18" to 4'+.

Other guy has done it at least 5-6 times.

Son has done N. Branch, Cherry (WV), WW Ctr in Charlotte and a few other class 2 runs with no issues). Nice ot be in a group thought just to keep an eye on him in a few of the tougher rapids.

Father and son (14 years old) likely in shredder and father has done it many times in SOT, ducky and once in a shredder so they should be fine.

Rob Scott, Dillon Scott

Will plan on meeting at knoll at 2 pm. Will let you know if this all falls thru for us for any reason.

Thanks. Looks like it may be a nice level (2.5' to 3' is my favorite although 4' is pretty fun if quick)

If the forecast holds the river will be at a medium-stout 3.6'. Normal summer level for this time of year is 1.5' to 2'. Just something to keep in mind. Additionally, be advised that the water temperature is currently a brisk 63 degrees.

Dropping LY plans for Friday but will paddle Saturday

Post by dkeller »

So I make plans for Friday and Saturday but then something comes up....

Just wanted to give a heads up that we will not be joining the group paddling on Friday. (Don, Sam, Dave, Rob, Dillon)

Will be paddling LY Saturday but that is another trip leader so that is all set.

Should be fun level of 3' - 3.5'.

Even Saturday may be around 3' or not too much lower which is still fun.

Don.

Yough Forecast:
Ohiopyle is expected to fall steadily between 3.0' and 2.5' through the weekend, but localized thunderstorms could cause unexpected rises.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming....WOW What a ride! . . . . . Trying to live up to this, Priceless. As long as you have good insurance!
