Coastals PA Weekend July 28/29 Novice/Interm. Paddle

Post by allsky7 »

SUNDAY, JULY 29th- Hey folks. Sorry for the late notice on this. Couple of things. Benscreek Canoe Club from Johnstown, PA is paddling the Middle Yough on Sunday, July 29th. They have graciously offered that any Coastals that want to join them....may do so. They would like to know in advance who plans to come. I will get more details if there is interest but the general plan is to meet a 10:00 to set shuttle and put on about 11:00. Please chime in ASAP if you want to join them. Thanks to Nancy for looking into this.

SATURDAY, JULY 28th - There will be a paddle somewhere other than the Lower Yough. Option #1 Casselman contingent upon water levels. Iffy at this point. Fingers crossed for some rain. This is a step up from the Middle Yough....but easier than the Lower Yough. The Cheat Narrows is Option #2 contingent on water level. Option #3 is the Middle Yough. Anyone skill level appropriate is welcome. You will need to be flexible. This is NOT an OCT. Please post if you would like to join us or have questions. Feel free to email or call me also. allsky7atyahoo.com / 434-841-294zero.

Keel Haulers Ratings *Higher the #....harder the river.
Middle Yough 12
Casselman (Ft Hill to Markelton) 16
Cheat Narrows 18
Lower Yough 23

As always.....the difficulty level changes as the river level changes.

I've only done the cheat narrows at high water but I only remember one rapid of significance and its very walkable lowering the difficulty of this river significantly if someone is on the fence. Laps here are also easy and recommended since its a pretty short run. Enjoy.

Might this be the rapid of which you speak?

It's kinda hard to tell, I've only seen it @ 15 feet. The name of the rapid of consequence is calamity. Its really the only thing i remember from the run. There was a big wave on the left and a ledge hole on the right. The line was left to right splitting the two. Az
