Webster Springs Trip Report

Post by Mango »

Webster Springs Trip Report, From a Slightly Different Point of View!

I am happy to report that I didn’t have any swims this trip. Largely due to the fact that I didn’t paddle. Being on the DL right now, I was regulated to Shuttlebuck status. :(

Saturdays trip took our group to the Tygrat River (Arden Section). We experienced, freezing rain, snow and bright sunshine, rotating what seemed to be in shifts of every 10 minutes. Paddlers seemed to have a great time. :D
My shinning moment occurred on the drive back to Webster Springs. While approaching the first Major Class 4, I saw the line instantly, ferried across 2 lanes of traffic and carved the MangoVan into a perfect eddy in the DQ parking lot. Luckily, Big Mike was alert and followed me in. Blizzards for everyone!
Pot luck dinner back at the Motel Parking Lot was excellent.
Sunday found the group headed to the Upper Meadow. Temperature was warm and the sun was shinning. The group made better time than I had expected and my nap in the hammock was interrupted way to early.

Despite not being able to paddle, I had a great weekend with good friends, good times and a hike with MaxK.

Downer for the weekend, forgetting my camera for the Tygrat trip.
Thanks to all those who helped Giggles put her skirt on.
Shout out to Corey for lacing up the Upper Meadow!
Trip coordination by KessmanN. :D
Thanks to everyone for making this a fun trip, especially Giggles! :)

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming....WOW What a ride! . . . . . Trying to live up to this, Priceless. As long as you have good insurance!

Tygart Valley River (Arden to Big Cove Run)

Hmm which thread to post on... Mango demanded action shots, so guess I'll post in this one!

Excellent weekend! Thanks to Kessmann for organizing everything, and Mangles for the shuttling services! And everyone else for the great spread at Saturday's potluck.

1.5 PFD's for me (I'd previously run the first half of the Arden section K1 at a much lower flow where the center line over Moats falls was unavailable, and took out at the beach just below Classic). So it was a treat to have just enough water to run it.

There was some curiosity in the group about what the hole in Wells Falls would do, if one should be off line and happen to end up in it. And right as we were finishing up scouting and putting back on, seemed like nature gave us a frown and white precipitation ensued :x
Anyways, so my turn to run Wells Falls, witness reports said I was too far right on the tongue. And last thing I remember was seeing a huge wall of white in front of me and saying to myself "OH $#1% here it comes" but it was nice and just rolled me, and I made my first roll soon after.

So then there was the paddle out... I forget who, but as we were paddling the flats someone sarcastically said something about a head wind and their "wish" was granted  along with quarter-sized snow, diagonal hail, rain, sleet, and to top it all off at the takeout, a clap of thunder

Not as bad as it looks, but still try and roll with some some urgency...

Here's the link to Micheal's Photo's from Moats Falls (Tygrat River).
He's the photographer that we ran into...twice. :D
You can't download from his flickr site, but he is sending me a CD with the photos on it.
