The Pigg River Ramble events are the weekend of June 1, 2, 3.

There is a night float on the Blackwater on June 1; the Ramble on June 2, and a breakfast float on June 3. You can do one event or all three.

This is an FYI listing; I'm not coordinating anything.

Ramble & Pigg RiverPark Updates

Post by Scott Martin »

Scott Martin here from Franklin County.

Thanks Raymond for the post. The Ramble is indeed coming up. An addition this year will be the availability of primitive camping at Waid Park for those interested. Camping will be available Friday and Saturday evenings on a drop-in basis. No cost.

On the good news front, the Franklin County Board of Supervisors included $800,000 for development of the Pigg RiverPark in the 2008 budget. This funding will complete development of the lower whitewater features. We are working with the Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation and the NASCAR Foundation to secure additional financial support. Our hope, I emphasize hope, is to have the lower section open in January. The section would contain 3-4 play waves.

The upstream dam will be removed over the next 18-24 months. The plus is that the new features will aid in sediment control when the dam is removed. Another plus is that as long as the dam is in place, it will continue to catch floating strainers during high water.

The final design bid will be awarded in May. The finalists are McLaughlin Whitewater Design Group (they of the new McHenry, MD Course) and Recreation, Engineering, and Planning (they of the Charlotte Course).

We are building a page on our website to keep y'all up to speed on the project and I'll post the link here once it is ready to go. In the interim if you have any questions, please feel free to lob an e-mail my direction - smartin@franklincountyva.org

Thanks again for all y'all do to promote paddling and clean rivers.

Well, we got some rain today in the Blue Ridge foothills of Franklin County, but we just missed the motherload. Some locations less than 30 miles to the north of us got over 4 inches today and are now under flood warnings!!! I see that the Tye, Maury, and Hardware Rivers will be cranking tomorrow.

Keep your fingers crossed that the storms rebuild and nail us here in Franklin County n the early afternoon tomorrow and then clear out for the night float.

There is a ton of moisture in the air and it has to hit the ground somewhere. We need it to hit Callaway and Ferrum.

On the plus side, tonight's rain SHOULD give good water levels for the Blackout float so come on up tomorrow for a fun night.

We still need some help on the Pigg so keep raindancing. Hope to see some Coastals here tomorrow. Raymond needs a chaparone.

Interesting news, I looked around a bit but can't seem to find the water you are talking about. I appreciate the enthusiasm though. Maybe you know a source I don't know about?
