Boating Near Roanoke Tuesday (Back Creek perhaps)

Post by Raymond »

The AW Gauge shows Back Creek (near Roanoke) running at 158 CFS with a minimum suggested level of 150. If it rains and holds, is that a good level?

Can anyone in the area look at it Tuesday morning (on the way to work perhaps).

Would anyone like to boat Tuesday afternoon?

I can't leave until 3:30 from Rocky Mount, so I would be in the Roanoke area around 4:00 - 4:15 and may have a few folks join me.

Plug all holes in your head before you get out on Back Creek.

Water quality is less than ideal (Pogue Valley Farm upstream has a LARGE manure pile that drains directly into Back Creek)

I have nothing to do today and would enjoy a nice paddle to take advantage of the recent rain fall... I see that Potts Creek has come up and so has Little Niagra on the Roanoke river..Just tossing a couple of runs out there for more options...

As of noon, the gauge shows plenty of water in Back Creek so unless it drops a lot, we will meet at the take out around 4:00 (see below for directions).

Post a reply if you're planning to join us so we know to wait (we have 4 Franklin County boaters going).

If we have a quick run, we can go do a short stretch of the Roanoke below Green Hill park, it should have fun play waves at this level.

Jimmy's Directions to Take out and putin:

Back Creek takeout is Red Hill Baptist Church on Rt. 220 in the Clearbrook area just south of Roanoke.

From there to the put in you go up 220 about 1/4 mile further, turn left on Back Creek Road, follow until it dead ends at Starlight, and turn rt. on Starlight Lane. Stay on Starlight until it runs into Starkey Road and go to the park w. soccer or baseball fields on the left by the creek, near the bridge.
