Paddle the James in Richmond on Wed, Thu, Fri?

Post by Howard Morland »

I'm going to be down there then. Will bring a boat if I can hook up with some local paddlers. I'm a class III playboater who rarely ventures beyond Mather Gorge on the Potomac.

The takeout is located just inside of the floodwall on the left heading south on 14th Street.
From I-95 south, get off at Franklin Street exit 74C, turn right at bottom of ramp.
Go to first lite, turn left onto 14th Street.
Follow 14th Street thru 4 lights, go under overpass, turn left just INSIDE of the floodwall.
If you cross the bridge you have gone too far

Glad you had a good time, come on down and do it again with more water. Just to correct the record- the canoe-DID NOT portage Hollywood, in fact, I ran the drop twice, first time making the left turn Howard described and the second time running the left line right into the eddy.

Howard,
We were glad to have you join us! As Tom said, come back down when there's more water. By the way, I substantiate Tom's clarification... he didn't portage, he ran ran it twice on two different lines!

Generally, I think that if I have the opportunity to paddle, and I've got something else to do or I feel like I shouldn't go for some reason, then I force myself to go and I always have a great time. So, I guess when in doubt -- Go, Paddle. -- Tommy Hilleke
