I'm comfortable on class III with a solid roll (have run the cheat, upper tellico, occoee,...) But i have zero knowledge of the James.
Would folks be ok with me joining in? Is it possible to get one of these permits on Sunday morning?
Thanks, and I hope to see you guys on the river!

you can go by a Richmond fire department and they will tell you where you can get your pass...there is one in church hill that does them and maybe there are others...not sure if you would have a problem getting it on sunday..may want to call
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away.
Skendrik, The American Whitewater page for the lower James has the address for the one fire station downtown that issues permits. There is no test but they like to hear that your going with the local boating community, since that is the fire station that will have to rescue you if you get stuck out there.

You need the permit for either the Upper or Lower. The Richmond Police were checking for permits at Pony pasture this afternoon. Fire Station 1 issues the permits and they are located at 24th Street and Broad. If it were me I would get there early in case they are on a call.
