OCT Shenandoah, Sunday, June 11.
Join us for Ice Cream Run #2, Newport to White House Landing, Sunday, June 11. We'll meet at the boat landing in Newport at 10:30. And we'll go for ice cream after the paddle. Let me know who's coming.
Whatever floats your boat

The current USGS reading for Luray is 405 cfs. My river diary for 10-12-19 listed the Luray gage as 340 cfs, and note to self this is a no go level in a solo canoe. Since the 211 bridge replacement, has anyone determined that the Luray gage has changed? Not to compare apples and oranges, From my diary I offer the following historical gage readings and their ratios in ft as I did not record CFS back then.: 2002 Luray 2.8 ft and Front Royal 1.8 ft. (Luray is 1 ft higher) 2008 Luray 2.25 ft and Front Royal 1.23 ft (Luray is 1 ft higher) Today 6-7-23 Luray 1.96 ft and Front Royal 1.19 ft. (Luray is only 0.77 ft higher). My opinion is the Luray gage has changed and now delivers a lower reading compared to the historical Luray-Front Royal gage difference. So I think actual Luray levels are slightly higher than the gage suggests. Best way for me to find out is paddle Sunday and see if I need to revise my min. no go level. Hey, I like ice cream and it's only a boat.

Ted, the foot reading to cfs ratio has definitely changed. Not sure if it was due to bridge replacement or just natural occurrences over time. The 2 lowest levels I've paddled this section have been 2.25 feet/281 cfs and 2.28 feet/305 cfs on the Luray gauge way back in 2008 and 2012 respectively.TedMc wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2023 10:09 am The current USGS reading for Luray is 405 cfs. My understanding is that cfs should stay consistent while the gauge height reading will change over time. Not quite sure how that works, but if true, the current level is above a true canoe zero.
