does The James normally run in June?

Post by joshstefanic »

Hi I am a PA boater looking to break up a long drive to the OBX in June by stoping to run the james with my dauther. Is it normally up that time of year? if so will both sections go or does the upper need more h20 than the lower?

Thanks for any info.

june levels

I've been keeping daily records for years. Generally by mid June you're looking at levels around 4-4.5 ft on average. That's a good level for the lower .I would consider that too low for the upper but I know others who will run it at that level. It would not be unusual to see a spike based on rain patterns. In 2009, we had levels up to 7.5 ft in mid June. Best advice is to check the gauge and catch up with some locals for shuttle

I have run the Upper as low as 3.9ft, and the lower at 3.7ft so you can paddle them, it just depends on how much work you want to do and how much punishment you are willing to endure. As Tom said, June should be a great time to paddle. See you then.
