March 15-17 Creek Trip (less advanced)

Post by Manchester Yacht Club »

I would love to be out stouting with Jdub and the rest of the big boys and girls but unfortunately I am still in the recovery period from shoulder surgery. That being so Raymond (Redford)and I (Triscuit) are looking to go hit some less advanced creeks that same weekend, perhaps even in the same area. Depending on levels we would either head south to Wilson Creek and perhaps Big Laurel and the forks of the French Broad, or we might head west to the New area for the Upper and Middle Meadow or Cranberry. The Nolichucky Gorge is always beautiful and has flow as well. If anyone wants to join us that would be awesome! Just message me and let me know. We're pretty open to running whatever so if you have another idea throw it out there.

March 15th and 16th Creeking in WVA

Post by Manchester Yacht Club »

It appears that there will be some water in WVA when we arrive, so Raymond and I will be hitting up the Cranberry on Sat and then Middle Meadow on Sunday. That is our official itinerary. People should come, Guiness for booty beers!

Very much not to be a wet blanket but it's been a heckuva year for tree damage in West Virginia. I have no idea how reliable the information below is but it seems worth a glance at least.

Thanks for the heads up Ken. That would have been a lovely surprise. And folks, don't trample each other to sign up for this fantastic super voyage. There's still plenty of time and space to join Triscuits and Redford this weekend.

Wood Report

Post by Manchester Yacht Club »

Looks like the MEadow and Cranberry are at least doable but with caution. We'll bring our saws and do necessary pruning.

Please post your observations. The Cranberry in particular is a favorite I rarely get to.

Looks like the Cranberry may have a slightly better reputation for wood at this point. Again, I haven't seen it with my own eyeballs.

Ken

Again from the MCC:

"Upper and Middle Meadow were basically clear, some wood here and there but nothing not visible. The trail alongside the river apparently had a bunch of logs down, so that would complicate a bike shuttle.

Cranberry report was for the middle (IV-IV+ section with S-turn), and they basically said everything was passable but that there was wood everywhere. Every eddy, every shore line, etc. I'd imagine a lot of stuff shifted around as the river went higher, so I'd do as much roadside scouting as you can.

And likewise for the Meadow. Just because there wasn't wood before doesn't mean high water didn't move it."

My beta from WV Creek Visuals is more optimistic. As always, caution is the name of the game.

First hand visuals?

Haven't seen any updated reports. Would you point me in the right direction to look please?

Which are you more optimistic about?

Thanks in advance
