Nolichucky Gorge is an 8 mile class 3 or 3+ run that goes from North Carolina into Tennessee. Though it is longer and has more rapids, I compare it to the Lower James in Richmond in difficulty. 900 cfs Noli = 5 feet LJ. 1250 cfs Noli = 6 feet LJ. Right now Noli is 1330 cfs and slowly dropping. Weather is the same all week: temp low 60's to low 80's, chance of thunderstorms.

One man contacted me and thought of doing one day on the French Broad River Section 9. It is easier than the Nolichucky but fun and scenic and is a little farther from Virginia. The FB is at a fine level of 2380 cfs.

Another man would like to run Balcony, possibly on Friday or Saturday. Water there is 2750 cfs which is nice. I thought of catching Balcony on the way to the southwest. Weather prediction is similar to Noli.

If anyone is going to Carolina Canoe Club Week of Rivers, this is all on the way. I am not going to WOR but am up for any of the above this weekend.

I'm going to the Week of Rivers on Saturday and am planning to paddle the Nolichucky that day, unless something like Big Laurel or Spring Creek across the mountain happens to be running. Those creeks won't run without some rain this week.

Friday noon Balcony

Meeting at Balcony takeout - the AT parking lot - at noon Friday.

Not sure about the rest of the weekend. Noli is kind of high.

Unless I make a last minute detour in the morning to a creek over the mountain, Saturday I'm paddling the Nolichucky. Meeting a group at Nolichucky Gorge Campground at 11:15. Post up and I can share phone numbers to coordinate if desired.
