It's almost that time again... the annual Chilly Chili paddle is just under two weeks away. Start the New Year off right.... get out, get wet, get cold, have fun and enjoy some camaraderie with lots of other crazy people. Afterward, we'll enjoy some good food and beverages. Anthony Harmon has once again graciously offered to open his home and host the after paddle CHILI party. The party is BYOB and BFFS (bring food for sharing) with an emphasis on Chili type dishes (though anything you bring will be devoured). I’ll let Anthony provide directions and any further details below.

This year, I’m offering an Upper James trip with an option to continue on to the Lower James. You may choose to do the Upper only, Lower only, or Upper and Lower combo. Please indicate which portions you are planning to partake in your post.

I will need someone to coordinate the group running only the Lower James segment. The goal is to meet up and mingle with the courageous souls doing the Upper / Lower combo. Let me know if you have an affinity for herding cats and wanna expand your horizons to herding boaters!

Here is the schedule:
0930 - Folks participating in the Upper only or Upper/Lower trip should arrive at the 14th St. takeout and change into their gear.
0945 Upper/Lower group will shuttle to Pony and drop vehicles at Reedy for folks doing the Upper Only .
1000 - Upper / Lower group puts on at Pony Pasture.
1145 – Lower only group should arrive, change into gear and organize shuttle at 14th St.
1200 - Lower group leaves 14th St heading for Reedy.
1230 - Lower group meets up with the Upper / Lower group at Reedy. Upper only folks' vehicles are waiting for them at Reedy.
1430 - Lower group takes out at 14th St., change clothes, pack up and head to Anthony's.
1500-1530 - All interested hungry and thirsty folks show up at Anthony's house.

Make sure you post, call, or PM.

Due to the large amount of water in and pouring into the James, I am not coordinating or paddling on the James on New Year's Day.

However, I do plan to be at Anthony's with Louisiana Red Beans and Rice.

Do you ever use this link? It shows levels on all Virginia rivers, and is near the top on Coastals links.

I am comfortable leading the trip. We can keep the schedule posted above. The Kinkers have volunteered for the lower only group.

Please keep your eye on the gauges.

Appropriate skills are expected at higher water levels. In addition a high water permit is required, per the city, above 9 feet. This can be obtained at Fire Station 13 on 411 E Commerce Road.

Post or pm with questions and RSVP.

I'm still in for at least the upper. I thought fire station #1 on 24th st was the place to get a permit (that's where I got my last one). Is #13 the place to get them now?

I'm in for at least the Upper.

I got my high water permit at Fire Station 1 last spring. If that has changed since then, they haven't updated the info on the James River Park System website, from which the following is copied:

"When water levels are at 9 feet or above, no one is allowed on the river without a permit. To get a high water permit from Richmond Fire Station 1, call (804) 646-4229."

Hope that's helpful. Thanks to all involved in setting up the trip.

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.

Temps? Cold (high of 50) but nothing warms you up like good friends and layering.

River looks like it might be between 9.8 - 10.3. Check it here for more accurate beta: http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrogra ... gage=rmdv2

Permits? Station 13
