Upper James after work Tuesday, 5/13 - EDITED - new time

Post by Slinky »

New paddler interested in doing a trip down the upper James after work on 5/13. I've made the trip three times this season (my first season), and I'm looking for some patient, knowledgable paddlers to join me and keep me out of trouble and maybe provide a t-rescue if I find trouble. I've got one experienced canoeist able to come and seeking a third paddler. More are welcome, of course!

I'm thinking meeting at Reedy at about 6:45. Let me know if you're interested on here or e-mail me at ian dot slinkman at gmail dot com.

I may join, but first I want to know if your friend, the canoeist and you are riding together or separably in order to run your own shuttle.

Now the reason I'm asking is that I'm running the Rappahannock tomorrow (early) and can swing through Richmond to do this run as well. However, I'll have some time to kill even after driving down and grabbing lunch. So my plan if I join you two is to just go to Pony Pasture, do a solo run down, then meet you two at Reedy Creek. That way I can kill two hours that I won't just be sitting around.

Thanks for the reply! I just spoke with my canoeist, who is telling me he can't make it until 6:45, not 5:45. I understand if that doesn't fit in your schedule, but if you can make it work without putting yourself out, I hope you can join us.

We do plan to drive separately and run our own shuttle. We can definitely work out meeting at Reedy and shuttling back up to Pony Pasture with all three boats (or more, if other folks come along).

Sorry for the confusion about the timing - I'm going to try to edit the original post. If it doesn't work out, hopefully I'll see you out there some other time!

6:45 doesn't give much time on the river, other then a straight shot down trying to beat the sun. Once you shuttle up, walk above Pony Pasture rapid sunset will be within 30 or 40 minutes and darkness not long later.

I will hold off on this one. Any other time I'd be up for it. I don't mind, (as well others here) showing you down the UJ or giving a hand were needed.

I share your concern. But, I am at the mercy at others' schedules until I am more comfortable on the river. I think I'm going to pass as well, and try for another day.

Have fun on the Rappahannock!
