Reschedule O.C.T. 5/9 Maury to 5/2

The celebration of Dad's 90th birthday has moved to May 9th so I'm moving my trip to May 2nd. The Maury is running right now and some rain is expected later in the week so stay tuned if you can't make it to the quarterly gathering. Depending on interest and water level I'm hoping for an intermediate level section below Goshen Pass perhaps followed by a run of the Pass.

Cheers,

Shameless plug, you should all head to WV for the club's quarterly gathering.

That said, if WV isn't in the cards for you then know I plan to paddle something Goshen-ish on Saturday. I may have to attend to a work thing (gasp) Saturday morning so my timing would be to meet around noon.

Gabe, are you interested in any particular section? I enjoy all of them.

Chris, yeah, I know what you want.

Anyone else?

As of this writing the rains today haven't done more than cause a tiny blip in the gauge for the Maury. If we get zero more rain and if they don't fiddle with the dam (not expected but possible) then I'd expect a moderate level for the Pass, a low but doable level for below Indian Pool, and a nice level for below the post office on Saturday.

Sing out if interested,

Ken Dubel

I think the Pass may be over my skill level, but I am down with Indian Pools or a relaxing RockBridge Baths run. Im comfortable on the Lower James in Richmond up to 6 ft or so *if* I bypass Hollywood for the Cemetery line. Ive been down Hollywood 4 or so times, but I can never make the move well.

If you guys just want to do the pass thats fine, I don't know if Id be able to make the drive from Richmond on Saturday.

Hi Bambam,

Having been out of town the last 2 weekends, I should stay home & work but if the pass is over 1.5' on the boater's gauge I'll make the trek on Saturday.

Rockbridge IFLOWS is under reporting. I've had 0.9" rain since yesterday. Only scattered showers today. Gauge is going up but not sure about upstream rain. I'd bet it'll be what you want, Dave. (2.7' USGS = 1.5' old bridge/stick gauge).

Gabe,
FYI, the 2 big rapids on the Pass can be scouted & portaged.

I'm game for any section, or a combo.

I'd like to do a PFD on the Pass and/or a Combo with the Pools. Noonish. Where? PO? I will not be much help with the shuttle, though, since I am in a rental (lady totaled my car at Webster Fest). Not getting new boating wheels until Monday.

For planning purposes let's say meet at the post office in Rockbridge Baths at noon. Sing out if anyone needs directions. I worked late (gotta love that on a Friday, eh?) and so haven't studied things extensively.

The Maury is currently at a good level for our purposes, there is a good bit of room for it to rise and still be cool, but rising it is. A glance at rain gauges says the watershed didn't receive much rain today plus an upstream gauge is hinting at a crest so I THINK we'll be fine.

The plan is to run from Indian Pool to Rockbridge Baths followed by a run through Goshen Pass. I consider the run below Indian Pool to be class III and the Pass to be class III - IV at the expected level.

I'll plan to check back and post again in the morning. Grizzled veterans, please feel free to just show up. 1st timers, please contact me first as I'd like to try to make sure you are well attended.

All good fun,

Ken Dubel
