OCT Goshen cleanup/cookout 3/23
Please join us for this annual good karma event! (I've been coordinating it for about 20 years while others did it for years before me.)
We'll meet @ the Rockbridge Baths P.O. on Rt. 39 on Sat, 3/23, @ 10am. Please park across from, NOT in front of or adjacent to the P.O. I'll have orange vests & trash bags. Then we'll drive upstream, stagger our parking, & pick up all the trash we can alongside Rt. 39 & down towards the river where possible. Please bring gloves. I also recommend long pants & long sleeves due to poison ivy. About noon, we'll head back to my house in RB for a cookout, courtesy of Coastals.
Most years, we've been fortunate to have enough water to then run 1 or 2 sections of the Maury - the Pass [Advanced], Indian Pools down [intermediate] &/or below the P.O. [low intermediate]. Given how wet we've been, I'm hopeful we'll have water. If not, Balcony Falls is always available as a back-up (35 minute drive from RB).
To help with my shopping list for the cookout, PLEASE LET ME KNOW BY THURSDAY, 3/21, IF YOU ARE COMING. However, if you decide to come @ the last minute, you'll still be quite welcome, but I won't be able to promise you a big lunch.
Thanks in advance for helping with this worthwhile club event - last year we had 21 volunteers & collected 31 bags of trash. It really makes a difference.
Please note the Pass trip will be putting in @ the swinging bridge, which is a Wildlife Management Area & requires a DGIF access permit or fishing or hunting license. See here for info: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/access-permit/ and http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/licenses/
Hope to see you 3/23!

In conjunction with Alicia's Goshen Pass paddle I am coordinating a trip scheduled for the Maury below the Rockbridge Baths post office. At the expected water level I view this as a class II run.
If you want to get fed at the cookout then she needs to know you are joining.
The river is fairly low right now (Tuesday) and dropping slowly. With nothing more than a sprinkle in the forecast I expect a fairly reasonable canoe zero water level for below the post office.
As to Alicia's Goshen Pass run, bring a beater boat and a positive attitude. As the saying goes, with a nod to Glenn Rose, "You will hit more rocks but you won't hit them as hard."
If it drops faster than I'm expecting or if the scouts fiddle with the dam then we have the James at Balcony Falls as a backup that will have plenty of water.
See you there,
Ken Dubel

Thanks for the RSVPs, Bill & Jenny, & others via email.
I'd really like to get all RSVPs by tomorrow/Thursday night. This is to ensure I have enough trash bags/vests & food for the cookout.
As Ken said, the river is low but dropping slowly, so we should hopefully have the option of an ELF trip in the Pass and his trip below the PO. (Sorry, Jenny, the middle IP section is too low already.) A beater boat for either section is recommended! And if a group prefers, they can head to Balcony Falls.
Will be sunny but cold (35 @ 10am & mid-upper 40s later) - perfect picnic weather!
Looking forward to it - remember NOT to park adjacent to the PO.

Sejal and I are planning on being there for the Goshen Cleanup.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming....WOW What a ride! . . . . . Trying to live up to this, Priceless. As long as you have good insurance!
