OCT MEHERRIN RIVER canoe camper 23-24-25 Nov

Post by mccloud »

The Meherrin River has been on my to-do list for a long time. I have looked at it from bridges, only. Last year at this time it was running 10 feet above normal following the hurricane so the trip was cancelled. I have not been able to find out whether anyone has paddled there in the past year. This river has a bad reputation for wood, so we didn't want either very low or very high water. The Emporia gage has come up to ~250 cfs, which ought to be a good level for exploring. Camping is expected to be on sandbars.

This is a gear-in-boat canoe camper, including carrying drinking water. Meet at the NC boating access ramp on rt258 just north from Murfreesboro, NC on Saturday morning, 23 Nov at 11am. This is the take-out, so we will leave a car or two here. We will drive up to the NC 35 bridge to launch. This trip will cover Ferguson's sections 2 and 3, totalling ~22 miles. This is a short distance for 3 days, and if it goes fast, it would be possible to continue down the next section.
