Coastals Spring Gathering- Beginner Trip, Saturday, April 29, 2023.
While this listing is for a beginner trip all are welcome to enjoy this easy and fun section of the Maury.
Meet at Jordan Point Park in Lexington before 10am. Will start shuttle at 10am sharp. Will run 7.5 miles from Jordan Point Park to take out at DWR ramp, Stuartsburg Road (rt 608).
Please check back as the river level and weather may force us to go to my back up paddle on the James, Buchanan to Arcadia. I will repost with final details on Friday afternoon.
At the pot luck supper on Saturday evening we will discuss another paddle for Sunday, 4/30
More fun.
After our paddle on Saturday, April 29 come join us for a meal and interesting program. Our Spring Gathering will be at Glen Maury Park in Buena Vista with BBQ and a potluck supper.
Then, enjoy an interesting presentation on Historical Perspectives on the Maury River, by Dr. Ken Koons, retired VMI professor of history.

SYOTR and hope to see you 4/29!

Re: Coastals Spring Gathering- Beginner Trip, Saturday, April 29, 2023.
Trip update.
Early in the week this trip did not look likely due to low water and lousy weather. Today NOAA is predicting 3.5 feet for Saturday at 7am. This is just right to have an easy paddle down this stretch of the Maury. The weather forecast is partly sunny with a high of 75 deg F. In just the last 30 minutes I have received requests to join this trip from five paddlers. So, I am estimating this trip will be a go.
Have had requests for help with trip locations. Here are the location addresses for the put in and take out. Just put these addresses into Google and you will be there.
Put in: Jordan's Point Park, Stono Ln, Lexington, VA 24450.
Take out: VMI Route 60 Bridge Boat Launch, E Midland Trail, Buena Vista, VA 24416 (note this take out has various names depending where you look).
I will still update you all on Friday afternoon.

Welcome Patrick and Dennis. We now have 12 folks on this paddle. The trip is a go. I will continue to monitor the river levels but gauge prediction is to peak at 3.9 feet around 8pm tonight and then start dropping. At 10am I estimate it will be 3.2 feet a nice fast level.
See you Saturday at 10am to do brief and start shuttle.
My best.

JJ, I plan to join you tomorrow as well.
Re: Coastals Spring Gathering- NOT a Beginner Trip, Saturday, April 29, 2023.
Good morning, looks like the river is exceeded the predictions and is still rising. As of 5:40am this morning it has risen to 4.35 feet and 2,190 cfs. Based on this I would not classify this trip as a Beginner run. Since the rain was wide spread I can think of no easier river to switch to. I plan to show up and paddle BUT will check gauges and assess river conditions from the bank. As with all Coastals trips each individual must assess their own risk and comfort.
I will lead more friendly beginner trips in the future.
I will not check this post again.
