Watching the Cranberry for 2/26 or 27
If Goshen Pass runs then I'll stay "local".
On the other hand, the Cranberry is currently at a friendly level, running around 3.9 feet / 450 cfs and rising slowly. From what I can tell online there doesn't appear to be any snow cover in that area. It crested a couple of days ago at over five feet so I'd guess the watershed is primed.
Translation: It's running now and I'd expect it to hold through the weekend (if it doesn't get too high). Forecast high in Richwood on Saturday is 50, 58 on Sunday.
It would be a long day trip for me.
Sing out if interested,
Ken

I'd love to have you join us Nate but I'm a little worried ...
... that you'll like it so much you'll get snooty and not be so willing to paddle Balcony with us.
The Cranberry is a great run. [Edit]
"At ordinary mortal levels there's nothing on it more difficult than Devil's Kitchen. It's busier though and more creeky. More cool eddy grabs than you can shake a stick at."
Having run it today (Sunday) I am reminded that the above (now in quotes) was an understatement regarding the overall difficulty of the Cranberry versus Goshen Pass. The Cranberry is significantly more intense overall in terms of rapids lengths, gradient, and the variety of moves required. I hope I didn't mislead anyone. [end Edit]
I know this is blasphemy but I'm almost kinda hoping the Pass doesn't run?
All good fun,
Ken

Just saw your post!
Keep me updated! Saw what you said about the Kitchen and I'm REALLY interested! Are you looking at Saturday or Sunday? Either way, I'm game. I'm coming from Lynchburg, can I meet you anywhere? Anyone from Lynchburg area needing a lift?
Send me a PM or email me at

Hi Ethan.
By the way, you should be able to delete your own posts provided no one has replied to them. (Not sure how it works if you reply to your own post. Try deleting your reply first.) Click the edit button and go from there.
Regarding which day, at this point we're being gauge-watchers. I plan to post details here this evening.

The Maury is looking less and less like it will go, but I'm still holding out a shred of hope for an ELF run this afternoon. At the same time getting stoked about something new in the form of the Cranberry.
Ethan did you and another guy from Lynchburg named Andrew help another buddy and I with shuttle at balcony once a few months back? I paddle a red canoe and he a little yellow playboat.

No, that wasn't me, but...
I met a guy named Andrew a couple weeks ago when the Pass was running, he was from Lynchburg and was in a Wavesport Y.
I haven't paddled Balcony since.....October?
Look forward to the info tonight!

Sorry - I slacked off and didn't write a trip report, so here's the express report on the Cranberry from 2/19 - 2/20 for your planning purposes:
Roads: 4WD is highly recommended, thou some 2WD vehicles did manage to make it down and up. The road down to the river was a glacier in long stretches. Several vehicles got turned sideways. One 2WD truck of trout fishermen got stuck down there on Friday night and they had to expectantly camp out.
The shuttle from the middle takeout to the putin requires a good amount of ground clearance (more than the road down to the river), as it has channelized tracks with the snow between the tracks being as much as 10" deep. Stay within the snow tracks when available, because they can be a pain to get back into!
Water: Cold! All snow melt I presume, some snow still in the valley. Levels were 4.43 on Sat, and 3.86 on sunday. We did the Middle+Lower Saturday, and Middle on Sunday. 3.86 is boney, but passible, although I did manage to break my boat at that level (it was coming)
Carnage: No swims in our group that ran the middle either day, but I did spend more time upside than I wanted to, and got some bark taken off of my knuckles in S-turn.
That all said - might join yall again on Sunday if the people i'm supposed to be taking down Balcony all bail on me.

I'll add my 2 cents to this conversation, since I was with Big Mike last week.
The river at 4.5' was a good level for intermediate creeky river running. Lots of good boof spots, and holes that weren't too sticky. I was running a borrowed boat (thanks Mike) not my little playboat, which made some things a little challenging, but nothing too hard. At under 4' things were much more channelized, but still just as fun.
as far as carnage, I too spent some time upside down, temporarily lost my paddle in s-turn, and about froze my hand off holding onto the rock without my pogies (should have listened to Alicia and worn gloves).
I will probably not be joining this adventure however, since I'm still a little sick, but highly recommend the trip out. as long as you can get down the road.

Hmmm. Thanks for the snow report. For various reasons I'm wanting this trip for Sunday, not Saturday. It's showing a crest today, just now, at around 5.4+ feet which is a little more than I want right now. Tough to know what it will do this time when fifty degrees and sunny hits that snow.
I'm guessing it will still be at four feet or better by Sunday. The general plan would be to meet at the takeout (Big Rock) at noon and go from there. I feel pretty confident that this trip will go but no guarantees -- gotta love creeks.
It's not okay to just show up for this one, please.
Better details tomorrow,
Ken
