O.C.T.- Bloomington 5/6

Let us know how it went! Swim confessions and carnage reports are welcome, but it's not fair to tell on your buddies!

O.C.T.- Bloomington 5/6

Post by open boater »

My first time coordinating a trip was successful even though attendance was light. Only 5 boaters, 4 in kayaks, Wade(Mango) Kinker, Sejal (Eva) Shah, Stephanie(My Hero) Bertram and Gerry(still waiting for a nickname) Ellis and me, Tom(Big Pink) Wood in an OC-1. My wife, Christina (The Mad Baker) provided shuttle, photo and meals. Attendance at this release was as light as I'd ever seen it providing open river for as much surfing, ferrying and eddy hopping as you wanted. The only carnage to report was yours truly taking a swim after repeatedly challenging a side surfing wave at the Ledges. After Blue Hole, the wind and cold kept us from playing too much. At Robin's Nest, Stephanie challenged the conventional left line by following Sejal down the right side, seeking practice for her combat roll and she found it! As always "My Hero", executed her roll flawlessly. The rest of the run was uneventful. We returned to the campground to enjoy Christina's fine chicken cacciatore over polenta, good wine and a roaring campfire to ward off the cold.
Sunday dawned cold but bright & sunny. Unfortunately, by the time we were joined by GBCC members, Ken Wardlaw & Dave Kane (both K-1) the clouds had socked in and temperatures were below 60. Again the river was relatively empty and we had another fun run. No carnage or excitement to report.
I would recommend this river to any PN or LI boaters looking to sharpen their skills. The combination of fast water, wave trains and forgiving swims makes this a great place to practice "hard moves on easy rivers". Since I can't make either of the next 2 releases,I look forward to returning in the fall to enjoy the foliage

The menu sounds great!

What does this mean?
Envelope – Free stationary taken from the Marriott while on a business trip.
Snowflake address label – sent to me free and had to be used up.
Stained glass stamp – It was more then three feet away from me when I decided to get them so you know I didn’t see them clearly
Butterfly and Sunflower stickers on the back – Also free and required because the glue on the envelope was so old it no longer stuck.

Sounds like it was a great trip. Hope you didn't burn all those faggots, you'll need some for the WOR. Wish I could have seen your play at the ledges. So I guess Barry was a NCNS?

Excitement

Post by Gerry »

Awesome weekend - lots of fun.
Actually during the trip there was some excitement and maybe a lesson learned - and here it is;
Always check the stitching on the grab-loop of your skirt (K1) before your run. One of our friends' was hanging literally by a thread. When this was noticed we rigged a strap into the way that Pyranha designs the fronts of their cockpits. It worked very well as a temp method - and never had to use it on the river.
