Back Creek, or the Definition of Cold Weather Paddling

Let us know how it went! Swim confessions and carnage reports are welcome, but it's not fair to tell on your buddies!

Back Creek, or the Definition of Cold Weather Paddling

Post by jules »

Friday, March 7, 2008, 9:15 am. The phone rings. It's Guy. "Are you coming this weekend?" "I don't think so, I have stuff to do and anyway it's going to be around 34, breezy and it's supposed to snow." "Hmmm stuff, huh? Well, I'm going because I SAID I WOULD and besides, the weather is supposed to be 45 and partly sunny." "Whatever, talk to you later."

11:45 am. I ask my boss if I can leave early, and I head home to pack. Guy, Doug, Greg and I meet at Guy's and head out in the corn wagon to Douthat State Park and literally almost run into Dave and Liz on I-64. The cabins at the park are cozy and warm and perfect for meeting up with more friends: Shawn, Laura, Thomas and Emily.

Saturday, 8:30 am. Shawn is anxious to get going but we're hoping if we drag our feet the gray skies will give way and we'll get some sun. For a few seconds it looks like that might happen, then the sky opens up on the way to the takeout. It let up enough to let us get on the river around noon at 3.6 ft/425 cfs.

Despite the Tellico-length shuttle, the trip was short and uneventful under a gray sky. At the end, nine frozen boaters piled into Dave's pickup to head back to the putin. By the time we got to the cabins, the gear was frozen in the truck and the wind had picked up. Dave fried awesome wings and fries that people continued to talk about the next day and Thomas made his famous green chili, and for dessert we were treated to a poetic reading of the cabin guest book by Thomas.

Sunday morning brought the promise of buckwheat pancakes at the (Warm Springs?) Ruritan Club about 75 miles away the long way. After filling our tummies with hot pancakes and maple syrup next to a cemetery with two port-a-potties installed we headed to the Maple Festival in Monterey. We found reasons to not buy 1.5 pounds of fudge but some people bought maple donuts from the short line (thanks for the bite Em!). By the way for those in the know, the guy at the head of the long line didn't move for the 15 minutes we waited in it and it was loooong.

Yea, but don't remember it having "a good beat, and you could dance to it" feel.

perhaps my synapse' aren't as raw as I remember the music to be

Great pics and vids.

The last credit of the video is my fav!!!
Envelope – Free stationary taken from the Marriott while on a business trip.
Snowflake address label – sent to me free and had to be used up.
Stained glass stamp – It was more then three feet away from me when I decided to get them so you know I didn’t see them clearly
Butterfly and Sunflower stickers on the back – Also free and required because the glue on the envelope was so old it no longer stuck.

Video was awsome Dave! It did give me a little motion sickness watching it though..
I especially like the "In Memory of Pinky" tribute at the end.

True but you can't use the original version on Coastals. The original is not family friendly.

I'd post a response to this but it would probably get deleted.
I used to be a paddler, now I just play one on the Innaweb.

So, um, okay, I'll ask the dumb question.

I didn't notice Marshall, the trip coordinator, in any of the photos. Did he "represent"?

If by "represent" you mean stayed in Richmond and drank beer in his basement, then yes.

Give the man his due. He got the permit and reserved the cabin. Thanks Marshall. Too bad you missed it.
