Goshen Pass

Let us know how it went! Swim confessions and carnage reports are welcome, but it's not fair to tell on your buddies!

Goshen Pass

Post by Paddle Daddy »

Saturday 5/30/09 - thanks to Sam P and Brandon N (slo2rol) for taking me along for my PFD on the Maury/Goshen Pass. Also joined by Gibbie and Matt Leslie. Unbelievable day, perfect warm weather and a forgiving level just under 1000 cfs which helped cushion me from a lot of the rocks (except the one that bruised my left elbow, but I was so psyched up I didn't even notice that until Sunday night). 2 runs, in which I managed to stay upright through the Kitchen and Corner Rapid. Of course, I swam after flipping on one of the smallest ledges of the entire run and ending up in a pool too shallow to set up for my roll!! We only had one other kind of scary swim in our group, in Corner, and I won't say who, but all was well.

I ended up going to sleep dreaming of that incredible screaming run 100 feet downhill along the Wall. The paddling, the surroundings, and the company all made for one of those days that remind me why I am so glad I took up kayaking in the first place. Thanks again to everybody.

PD

PS to Gibbie - the other recent read I was trying to remember in the car was "Mayflower" by Nathaniel Philbrick which you would probably like given your interest. Also anything by Gordon S. Wood.

Saturday on The Pass

Post by slo2rol »

It was truly a perfect day to be on the Pass. I really enjoyed exploring the line through the frothy white stacked ledges on the left 40 yds below the cadillac eddy. Boof city! :D

Hopefully Corner's victim will chime in to let us know that he's still doing okay.

PD and Giibbie - Good job on the PFDs! Thanks to Sam P for coming down to lead the way.
Generally, I think that if I have the opportunity to paddle, and I've got something else to do or I feel like I shouldn't go for some reason, then I force myself to go and I always have a great time. So, I guess when in doubt -- Go, Paddle. -- Tommy Hilleke

It was I....lesson learned, don't miss the boof at Corner to the right! First boof at corner was so good, thought I could perfect the second time. Got a little lazy and missed right. Other than a nice scratch on helmet and a sore forearm, all is well. Paddle was too epic to get down about a little carnage. Had a blast and enjoyed the drive Brandon, Patrick, and Gibbie. Sam, thanks for the lead down and i ended up with your paddle jacket in my car.
