App 9/13

Let us know how it went! Swim confessions and carnage reports are welcome, but it's not fair to tell on your buddies!

App 9/13

Post by Paddle Daddy »

Lucie and I want to thank everyone who went yesterday on Lucie's PFD of the Appy. I really love that river, and though it was getting a little scrapey by the afternoon run we both had a terrific time. Lucie ran Pipeline and Target Rock like a pro, and ran most of the river picking her own lines or at least not following Dad's. Good for her.

App on Saturday

Post by eeyore »

Thanks:

Thanks Jim for your leadership for the AM trip (and also for the PM App trip.) The App is a nice run even though I only could recall that pipeline rapid was on the Lower James. ('made me wonder if we had suddenly switched rivers) Some old folks are not very knowing, and are much less wise. Keep us posted on appropirate trips on weekdays or weekends.

Thanks again for a fine day for all of us .... and all were survivors too.

Thanks to Jim for leading the way on the Sat afternoon run of the App! I really enjoyed this run particularly Jughandle, Target Rock and Pipeline ... except for the fact that I turned too far to the left in the left hand turn and went into the first ledge hole a sideways and on top of the eddy line. This usually wouldn't have been a problem in my big boat, but I took my new low volume boat and when the bow started to turn upstream, the flat, low volume stern caught in the main flow and the fish counting began. So, I rolled, and hit a rock and went over again, tried a few more attempts, finally snapped it up for good (so I thought) and looked over my shoulder to see a white rock garden behind me and, of course, the rock on my downstream side onto which I had just broached that flipped me again. After a few more failed attempts with minimal air, I pulled the skirt and  SWAM  only to realize that a T-rescue was at the ready

Learnings from this trip:
1) the App has several rapids that make the trip worth running
2) I need to continue to work on the roll in the new boat
3) to limit the number of swim reports, I need to skip the last roll attempt and signal for the T-rescue!

Thanks Again to Everyone for a Great Trip!
Generally, I think that if I have the opportunity to paddle, and I've got something else to do or I feel like I shouldn't go for some reason, then I force myself to go and I always have a great time. So, I guess when in doubt -- Go, Paddle. -- Tommy Hilleke

I will also pass along my thanks to Jim. I always have a great time on the Appy. If only I could get far enough left in Target Rock  I will get that rapid one day. Who would have thought that I could run Hollywood and Pipeline on the James dry but Target Rock eats my lunch every time...
