Apps on Saturday at 1000.
Jim, I would like to join you on the Apps. I'll see you at the Campbell bridge takeout at 1000 on Saturday.
Sally and I plan to join you on the Sat afternoon run. See you at 2 p.m. at take-out.
To Riversedge73: More important question is 'what is your skill level?' Comparisons to James only help if you have paddled the James. What rivers have you paddled and at what river level? What kind of boat do you paddle (canoe or kayak -- if latter, do you have a roll)? How long have you been paddling? The App has a lot of intricate channels and rock gardens throughout and 3 more substantial rapids (Jughandle, Pipeline and Target Rock / Girl Scout choice). The latter two can be easily scouted from the shore before you even run shuttle. Since you live in the area, my suggestion would be to walk up the trail from the take-out and look at Pipeline (the rapid that runs under the trail bridge) and Girl Scout (the one downstream of Pipeline on the right side of the river near you). If those rapids look like they would be ones that you feel comfortable running, you will probably be ok on the other stuff (particularly if you follow someone who knows the routes and/or can describe them to you). Hope this helps.

app
thank you gretchen, a 10am and a 2pm run, the 2pm run looks to be a scrapy run down, it might be close
katie, easiest way to the take-out from richmond
95 south to wythe/washington exit
washington side to the right
stay in the 2nd lane from the right all the way
the road will narrow to two lanes about a mile in
should be the next red light, south street take the right (sign on pole will be truck route 36 )
the road will snake around, do not take any of the rights or lefts, at the bottom of the hill bear left in front of the closed grocery store, cross the railroad tracks, parking lot will be on the right

It will still be better than scraping down the James
Another way to get to the takeout:
1. On I-95 S, get off at TEMPLE AVENUE exit (Colonial Heights).
2. Go to T-intersection and turn LEFT onto Temple Ave.
3. Go to T-intersection and turn LEFT onto Boulevard
4. Go straight for about 1 mile. Turn right at Dupuy St. (WaWa station on the near right corner). Dupuy St. becomes Dupuy Rd. after about .4miles. Go less than .1 mile, then continue on E. River Rd.
5. Pass VSU entrance on your left.
6. Keep on road for about 1-2 miles until it makes T-intersection at stop light. Turn LEFT.
7. You're now on Rt. 36.
8. Follow this road through town of Ettrick (don't speed!). Road will curve to the right and cross the river.
9. Parking lot on left just after you cross the river -- very visible from road.
