Great day on the Tye

Let us know how it went! Swim confessions and carnage reports are welcome, but it's not fair to tell on your buddies!

Great day on the Tye

Post by bambam »

I ran it three times today in my Dagger Greenboat, a kayak which is longer than my canoe. That boat takes a bit of a mindset shift as it has speed but speed is not always a good thing.

Driving in I could see evidence that the river had been in the road but only caused minor damage.

We picked up an orphan on the first run, lost him for the second run but picked up slo2rol, lost a few for the third run but picked up another orphan so it was never the same crew twice.

The river was at a great level -- low enough that there were features to mess with but high enough to make the wave trains big and pad the rocks. Zero portages but a couple of trees to watch out for.

Congrats to our two first-timers and thanks all for coming out!

Laps on the Upper Tye with all of you guys was a great way to finish off a nice loooooong day in Nelson Co - especially getting to be there for Brian's PFD! Sorry I was late coming over from the Piney, but thanks to all those that waited. It was also nice to meet and paddle with Lee, John and Jimmy. And even though I didn't get to paddle with her, I finally met Regina while poaching shuttle!

Upper Tye = great fun runs had by all!!
Generally, I think that if I have the opportunity to paddle, and I've got something else to do or I feel like I shouldn't go for some reason, then I force myself to go and I always have a great time. So, I guess when in doubt -- Go, Paddle. -- Tommy Hilleke

Absolutely, the upper Tye is always fun. I had a great time on my two laps. It was good paddling with several familiar folks and also good meeting John and Brandon. If the wet trend continues we should get several more days out there this spring, I'd also like to target the Piney next time! Jimmy

What a gorgeous day in Nelson county! I thoroughly enjoyed my first trip down the Upper Tye, particularly the great group, the intimacy of a scenic smaller river/creek and the visible gradient; good times.

The river was running about 1050 cfs according to USGS. We put on and I was smiling immediately! :D The river is pretty much constant fun from the put-in to the takeout.

I did have an out-of-boat experience, about midway down. Wish I could say what happened, but I was bouncing off the bottom before I knew it. My one other earlier flip ended with a roll--no surprises. But, the second flip revealed the sometimes shallow character of these smaller scenic beauties. After a couple rejected attempts to get setup for a roll, I was relocated to the back deck for a better view of the nearby rocks. Out of air, I got out, made my way to a RL eddy, and spotted the boat headed to a a RR eddy downstream. Brandon, Jimmy, Chris, and John recovered the boat; Ken held up to check on me, then pendulum me across to RR. Except for a deflated ego and banged knee, all was good. (Shameless plug: swiftwater rescue training should be part of every paddler's essentials--I've used it more than I imagined I would.)

It was nice meeting Regina, George, and Lee in the shuttle exchanges. Thanks to Brandon, Ken, Chris, Jimmy, and John for my pfd of the Upper Tye, and for their parts in reuniting me with my boat. Extra props to my Bro for giving up a second lap on the Piney for my UT pfd. It's a beautiful and fun river, and I look forward to my next trip! -Brian
