Appomattox River Report

Ran the Appomattox from the put in at Chesdin Dam to the new takeout on river left downstream of
the old dam in Petersburg. Was a great level (2160 cfs), but paddlers should be aware of the
changes to the old "whirlpool rapid" below the Route 36 bridge just after Target Rock. Now that the
dam has been removed downriver, the previously inundated rapid where whirlpool once was is now very
much in play. Be prepared for a significant wavetrain with a drop of 10-12 feet.....think of Lower
Keeney on the New River in WV. Not quite as intense, but on the way. Tons of fun! Total run of 7+
miles took about 2.75 hours plus shuttle time. Pulled off the river at dusk and was concerned about
having the car at the put-it locked behind the gate that closes at dusk!
