3/10 O.C.T. for Goshen cleanup & paddle

Post by Alicia »

Just making an advance plug for the good karma event of the year! The ideal plan will be to have a hardy crew to do about an hour & a half of roadside clean-up, then have good water for both a Goshen Pass & lower Maury river trip (advanced & intermediate trips, if @ all possible). Backup plan will be Balcony (lower intermediate). Perhaps a cookout or dinner out together afterwards.

Stay tuned for details later, but mark your calendars now. Many thanx.

cleanup 3-10 and Whitetop 3-3

Post by David »

I definitely plan to be there March 10 for the cleanup. I hope the Maury has a good level. Do you want to clean on the river as well as the road?

Excellent chance of a trip on Whitetop Laurel on Saturday March 3. Ken has been saying, "It's on my list." If not now, when?

I would like to paddle something closer to Roanoke Sunday March 4. Maury? Buffalo Creek?

another shameless plug

Post by Alicia »

I know you're all thinking about THIS wkend, not next, but thot I'd still make a plug for the clean-up. Again, it's excellent karma for future river running!

Considering how much water is in the Maury now, plus chance of rain Fri., there's a decent chance we'll have water next wkend, too.

To recognize the volunteers who'll be coming out for the clean-up, Coastals will treat with a cook-out afterwards. :D

So, tentative plan will be to meet @ Rockbridge Baths Post Office (the old store) @ 10am. Then head upstream to do the roadside clean-up for about 1.5 hrs (with more folks, it won't take as long - hint, hint). Bring gloves. I'll have orange vests & trash bags from VDOT.

Then we'll run the Pass, & if some want to run the lower section of the Maury, I have a volunteer who could lead that trip. (Back-up plan remains driving 35 minutes to run Balcony.) Either way, after paddling, we'll have ourselves a cookout afterwards.

Please post or email me to let me know you're coming. Thanx!

bumping up for Monday viewing

Post by Alicia »

Well, I don't want to mislead anyone - I certainly cannot guarantee water for the Pass on 3/10, but I can guarantee a good feeling after doing the clean-up. After further thought, & especially if we end up running Balcony if the Pass or Lower Maury is too low, I think we'll do the cookout for lunch, after the clean-up & before paddling.

Again, please let me know if you're coming - many thanx, Alicia

fingers crossed

The river barely dropped today (23" on bridge), so I'm feeling hopeful that we may get to do a low-water run in the Pass, or @ least a trip below the store/post office.

Thanx to those who've planned to come so far - more are certainly welcome. But do let me know so I can plan for lunch (who says you can't get a free lunch these days?).

Again, the plan will be to meet @ the Rockbridge Baths store @ 10am Sat. Please bring gloves & dress for cool & possibly rainy.

THANX!

Thanx, Stephanie - only if you want to.

As part of my role as Recognition Chair, I'm going to recognize the clean-up volunteers w/ lunch, courtesy of the club. (If anyone needs me to get tofu pups, please let me know.) Kind of like the Newsweek Person of the Year being YOU.

Assuming we get enough people to do the roadside cleanup stuff (looks promising), I'd like to get a subgroup going on the river to clean up the left bank from a bit above the put in for the Pass down to Roadside rapid.

The high water event which left that lovely log in the Kitchen also deposited a bunch of trash on the left bank. Not tons of it, but enough to be unsightly in a pretty place. One item in particular is a blue fiberglass something about the size of a car's hood which would take a bit of rope work to get out.

Beyond that my thought is to bring an old beater canoe (yeah, like I own anything better than that), (oops, no offense to the Blast), skip the stern airbag, and load it up, ferrying garbage bags to the road as needed.

I could use a little help. I'll do the wading and hopping out of the boat to grab stuff part. Mainly I want some backup in general plus someone to grab a sappling and hang onto my boat for a minute sort of thing.

It might even end up being kinda fun.

clean up

Post by Raging waters »

Hey Ken, I'm definately off this weekend! Melissa(wife) is sick, but may be better by Saturday. She says I should go and have a good time. I'll wait and see. Our daughter Courtney can be here to help out with Landon. So I'm 90% sure I'll make it. seeya

The plan

Post by Alicia »

The weather should be good, near 60 degrees. The river is dropping, & while the Pass might be bare bones runnable, I'm leaning towards running the Lower Maury from Rockbridge Baths down to Copper Road (class 2+, extremely pretty, able to run lower than the Pass). We can finalize that on Sat (so if some want to beat down the Pass, they could).

Meet @ Rockbridge Baths store/post office (there is no store anymore) @ 10am. Then we'll head upstream for the roadside clean-up (& perhaps a riverside clean-up, a la Ken's post above). Probably about an hour & a half. Bring gloves. Then we'll reconvene @ my house (in Rockbridge Baths) for lunch - no need to bring anything - it's on Coastals. Then on to the river.

Should be a good time all around. Give me a shout if you're coming, but come on anyway if the spirit moves you Sat am. Thanx.

OK. Do I have volunteers to pull my behind out of the water if I decide to open boat? Below the store of course, not the pass. Oh and I don't wanna hear any "You're holding the paddle wrong" bull. I was told, in the commune I grew up in, that there was no wrong or right way to do things. (Except for always voting for tax breaks for the rich and keeping the poor people poor. That was always wrong. Oh yeah and smacking nutria in the head and making gumbo apparently they are a peaceful animal) There was only YOUR way of doing it.
