NOC Intermediate I Class (dislocation numero two)

Post by Scubaman »

So the story goes like this. I take the weekend for a hiking festival. Leaving Damascus on Sunday to check in for my 4 day course at the NOC. I planned to stay through memorial day after the course for some more kayaking.

Sunday dinner. Great food. Really good stuff. I've paid 40 bucks for a meal and eaten much worse. The cabin was full. Maybe 15 people. Our room had 3 people. Way too crowded but so it was. The cabin in general had enough room, just we got stuck crammed into one sleeping arrangement. The place was plain, but clean and practical.

Monday starts with a healty breakfast. The instructor eats all meals with us. So you get sort of a class room session while you eat. This means the instructor spends about 10+ hours with you every day.

After breakfast we go to choose from just about any boat they make. All the latest models. I fall in love with this new Jackson superfun. It makes my Z feel like sitting on a piece of concrete. Off to the lake!

About an hour on stroke refinement. Certainly something I needed. One guy rolls first, then its my turn. I roll and don't get up. My skirt flooded but I wont pretend thats the only reason I didnt get up.

I T-Rescue (eskimo rescue, bow rescue..whatever) and end my trip. I didnt even put much pressure on it, but I guess my hand was behind me. I dislocate my shoulder. Not the one I did 4 years ago, but my right arm this time.

The instructor drags me to shore. He asks if he can try to set it. I'm game. Using the baseball technique he has my arm back in within 15 seconds.

Long story short, I get a ride back to the cabin, chill out, eat dinner and leave after breakfast the next day.

What a drag. This sport has just not let me in. I've tried 3 times now.
Hard to think about getting in a boat again. Maybe one day.

To all those I met in the last month of so, it was truly great. Have a fun and safe summer.

-Rob

ps: if you need some instruction and want to make a trip out of it. The NOC (Nantahala Outdoor Center) was top notch from what I experienced. In every detail.

Sorry to hear that.

That really stinks for you. Good luck and heal fast.
Envelope – Free stationary taken from the Marriott while on a business trip.
Snowflake address label – sent to me free and had to be used up.
Stained glass stamp – It was more then three feet away from me when I decided to get them so you know I didn’t see them clearly
Butterfly and Sunflower stickers on the back – Also free and required because the glue on the envelope was so old it no longer stuck.

That sucks. I feel your pain, truthfully as I have shoulder problems also. I don’t know your case but some of us have found ways around the issue. Mango uses hand paddles and I switched my rolling side, now left side. I also went to a doctor and started physical therapy which helped make the joint much stronger. Good luck to you.

Rob,

This really sucks!!! :( & :x We paddled what, four or five times in the last month since you've been back, and now you're out again. You get a combat roll in Mitchell's Gut on the third attempt, but blow your shoulder out in the lake....I can't hardly believe it - and it's not the same one as last time. I really hope that this one doesn't keep you out for 3 years like the last one - I've really enjoyed paddling with you and you really seemed to enjoy paddling again. Hopefully the right doctor this time and some good physical therapy will have you back in better shape very soon. Keep in touch and let us know how things are coming along.

-Brandon
Generally, I think that if I have the opportunity to paddle, and I've got something else to do or I feel like I shouldn't go for some reason, then I force myself to go and I always have a great time. So, I guess when in doubt -- Go, Paddle. -- Tommy Hilleke

Big bummer of course on your injury.

Given that it went out that easily you may have hyper extensive joints like mine. (Does your elbow go past straight?)

The formula which worked for me was near 100% religious immobilization for three weeks followed by visits to the physical terrorist, er, therapist.

Best of luck on a speedy and complete (quite possible, likely even) recovery.

Wow. Sorry about that. It's a shame.

I'm glad that you can still say good things about NOC and your experience with them. Glad they took care of you.

What a story. We paddled the upper together a couple weeks ago and talked about shoulder injuries. Who would believe the other shoulder and on a lake?

Maybe after you heal try an OC-1?

Sorry to hear that, man. Hope you recover quickly.... take your time, and hopefully you'll get back into it.
I love the smell of Neoprene in the morning...

As Karl said there are many people who continue to participate in the sport with modifications. Hope to see you back out.

My 2 cents worth from a therapist's perspective is the shoulder instability can be from weak and/or laxity. A good course of therapyand proper strengthening should really help.

Had the pleasure to paddle with you at the beginning of the month, awfully sorry to hear about your shoulder. Not sure if you remember the guy paddling the other diesel, but a year previous, he tore his rotator cuff on the lehigh. Get on the mend. See you on the river.

Thx for all the follow up posts.

This really is a great community.

The NOC instructor was trying to show me some OC-1 boats. I am not sure if that would satisfy me or not.

Either way I'm done for a while. I'm stupid enough that I'll probably be back though.

I really need to take one of those wilderness first aid courses. It was just magic the way he put my arm back in.

My first dislocation I would say the pain was a 9 of 10. This time, I would have to say it was a 3 or 4. This time was sort of low impact, where last time I blew it out side surfing a hole & doing an upstream brace. It took 5 hours to have it put back in. Silly ER.

Anyway, thx for all the words of encouragement.
