OCT Jackson/Back Creek is now Cheat "Narrows"

Post by STRAKER »

Well, in case you had not noticed it no longer rains in western VA. So in the name of paddling fun the trip has been changed to the Cheat "Narrows". I will be going up Saturday night and the plan is to run it on Sunday. Please let me know if you would like to attend. All are welcome. Stay tuned for info on where to meet.
Kayak-$1000 dollars...........Gas for the shuttle $60 dollars..........Watching your friends get munched by a bus-sized hole.......PRICELESS.

I'm there. I'll probably come up late on Saturday night too - I'll likely have one other person with me.
Generally, I think that if I have the opportunity to paddle, and I've got something else to do or I feel like I shouldn't go for some reason, then I force myself to go and I always have a great time. So, I guess when in doubt -- Go, Paddle. -- Tommy Hilleke

Well sweet it looks like we have a few takers. There doesnt appear to be much around there. I think the best meeting spot is going to be the put in. Do we have anyone driving up that day? If not then we should meet at 10:00am at the put in. I am hoping the water is going to stay its already looking on the low side. Has anyone ever run the Cheat gorge at really low water in case we have to use that as an alternative..........(edit) Ok we are actualy going to stay at the Heldreth Motel it has no reservations for Sat night so all should stay there and its cheap. This would be a fine meeting spot too.

So how much is it for Saturday night? Chances are that we'll end up there if it's cheap enough - don't really feel like sleeping in the truck below freezing.

Chris,

I just looked at the USGS gauge graph for the Cheat Canyon and it is at NEGATIVE 0.96, not POSITIVE 0.96 as indicated on AW so I don’t think that will be an option for you.

The Cheat Canyon at +0.96 is a III / IV (IV) run with some premium play spots and some things that will appear to be pretty blind and pretty big to a Class III boater. There are a few holes that are bad. It is difficult to scout some of the bigger rapids.

If it were me, Plan B would be the reliable but puss face inducing Lower Yough. If you head straight up RT. 26 from Albright, it takes you up to Marklesburg, PA and on up to US 40. A turn or two might be required. For convenience, 26 changes numbers when it crosses the state line. You probably want to look at a map.

Believe it or not, the Hedroth has wireless internet so you can check levels that morning.

Actually, I was speaking for Karla Sue *sigh*, Jug *sniff*, and Guy.

Know what would be AWESOME? If we could get JoAnn, Emily, and Arden to make those three boys paddle with them in a six person raft down the LY on a day when the Sandy was running and there was some big triathalon going on! Talk about some double angry face (  ) sad clowns!!

Chris, I emailed you through your Board profile. Check it when you get a chance and let me know if it's something that would help.

Looks like we are not going to be getting anymore water in the Cheat basin. The Narrows is going to be somewhere around minimum by Sunday, so the Paddling : Driving ratio is also pretty grim when you take into account the water level. So I have decided to cancel this trip.

JoAnn would not find rafting the Lower with a cranky Karl to be AWESOME! I'd rather be the most homely girl at a Mary Kay convention fighting off pushy make-up ladies.

OK, well you could safety boat then.

Oh, no, wait, I've got it.... you could VIDEO boat! That way the uber puss face fest would be available for all to see!

Hey, shouldn't you be working so you can support Karl so he can quit his job and become a full time triathalete?
