Glasgow RiverFest June 27

Post by Terri »

Coastals has been invited to the Glasgow RiverFest on June 27! Twin River Outfitters will rent boats and run shuttle for 3 separate trips that day: the James River at Balcony, the James above Balcony, and the bottom Maury to Glasgow. (All great runs for novices, kids, and families.)

There will be a huge shallow pool in the Glasgow Park for kayak/canoe demos starting at 4pm. We need boaters to bring their boats and gear to demonstrate and possibly let newbies paddle in the pool. It will be a great opportunity to practice/show off your rolls!

Coastals will have a table with our banner and brochures. Other outdoor organizations will have displays too.

The Silver Creek band will be playing that evening starting at 6:30pm.

So please let me know if you want to paddle that day and help with the kayak/canoe demos. (It won't look good if I'm the only one demonstrating!) Thanks! Terri

Is there a website for the festival? Might want to pass this along to my paddling buddies.

Come paddle the Balcony section of the James on June 27! We'll need help after paddling too. We'll have a huge pool for kayak demonstrations in the park in Glasgow. Check out all the happenings: http://glasgowvariverfest.homestead.com. Please let me know if you're coming. Thanks! Terri

Glasgow Riverfest June 27

Post by TedMc »

Looks like a fun time. If the water comes down I may come and paddle along with the intermediate trippers, Alpine to Riverdale Farm.

Note that their web page lists 3 skill levels of trips on the James, no Maury.
Further I can't tell if a shuttle is available from WCC to Alpine for private boats. It does not appear to be private boater friendly. They want to rent canoes at $60 a trip. Do you know something diffferent?

I'm not sure about the Outfitters' shuttle. I figure we can run our own depending on how many people come. I might run the bottom Maury down to Glasgow if it's still running.

Please let me know if you're coming, so we can coordinate. Thanks! Terri

James River trips sound great - we hope to make it

Post by dkeller »

We may bring 1-3 canoes with 1 adult and 1-2 kids (ages 10 - 14) in each.

2 of the adults have lots of paddling experience and my kids have been down the Lower Tye, Shenandoah, etc. and I have paddled for many years although I have never been on the James in this area.

We would probably want to go for the Rivervale Farm to Glasgow trip and then continue on down for the Glasgow to Snowden trip. for 7 total miles.

We would be coming from Yorktown, VA area so noon picnic onward would be good for us.

This sounds really great and a nice alternative to the Staunton River Fun Float which we were going to go to but sounded kind of crazy as far as numbers of people and possible alcohol issues.

Hope we can swing it and I can get a few people to come along for the ride from SE VA.

What level does balcony falls sect become too run to paddle?

Post by dkeller »

I know some will paddle down until there is one path with 3" of water but I am looking for the level at which most of the fun is gone out of it.

I see where AWA write up has 4' as a good level and it is at 3.69' (1710 cfs) right now.

I also saw where cut off in the announcement was 2.4' which I am guessing is pretty low although I saw 4' was the high cut off which is probably pretty conservative and related to liability for canoe rental.

Just wondering since I have never been on it.

Thanks.

Don, just in the interest of complicating it for you (kidding), I add the cfs of the James at Buchanan to the cfs of the Maury at Buena Vista to get an idea of what the Balcony run will be like. (Notion brazenly stolen from David Bernard, btw.)

My river notes-to-self say a 2,000 cfs combination makes for a friendly fun day with lots of little play features if so inclined.

At the moment the gauges are adding up to right around that number.

Seems like a quite nice level to me.

Your call, of course.

Don:
My records support Bambam's numbers. The Coastals summer gathering is typically paddled with Buchanan at 3.69 feet, a friendly run.

The summer gathering was run in 2007 and 2008 at 2.4 ft (700 cfs)...boney. My records do not add the Maury.

Sounds good and thanks for the flow info

Post by dkeller »

Hopefully the James will hold enough water for a fun day.

Never been on that section.

Too far when I was starting out and too mild for solo paddling these days. I only get out about 8 - 12 days a year these days so I tend to go for the CLass 3 - 4 stuff.

Sounds like a nice paddle with my two older boys however.

Hope to see some Coastals members up there and meet some new paddlers.

Ted with his adult daughter (OC-2) and Caroline K-1 will be at the WCC Rivervale Farm about noon +/- Free hotdogs sounds worthwhile.

Want to paddle Alpine to Rivervale Farm. We either need to organize our own shuttle on this web site or make shuttle reservations with WCC for their 2:00 pm trip.

Glasgow Riverfest Plans

Post by dkeller »

Looks like we will have 2-3 canoes on Saturday coming up from Yorktown area.

Looking to do Rivervale to Glasgow and then continue on down to Snowden.

Will plan on arriving at Rivervale around 11:30 - noon for free food, etc.

Hope to find others with similar interest to set shuttle or I guess we can hope to snag a ride at the end.

I guess we will get in the water around 1pm according to the trip schedule and tag along with the scheduled trips as a fall back if not another group going or interested in hooking up.

I know Terri is looking into coordinating a trip as well so we will be waiting to see those plans.

Please post plans if you have any. We are willing to hook up as long as we do balcony falls section. Adding the extra 2 miles from Rivervale is nice as warm up and to make the 3 hour drive more worthwhile.

Thanks.

Don.
