1/21/12 Z-Drag Class

Post by Dave K »

Even on Class II –III streams, there are times when the only way to recover a pinned boat is to wait for the water to come down or use mechanical advantage.

Although typically discussed in 2 day Swift Water Rescue Classes, the Z-Drag and other mechanical advantage recovery methods need to be practiced regularly if they are to be implemented efficiently on the river. This dry land class is designed to focus only on this one area of Swift Water Rescue so as to give each student a solid foundation in mechanical advantage and the building blocks needed to use it.

Several spots are still available, get yours before they're gone!
Generally, I think that if I have the opportunity to paddle, and I've got something else to do or I feel like I shouldn't go for some reason, then I force myself to go and I always have a great time. So, I guess when in doubt -- Go, Paddle. -- Tommy Hilleke

This kind of gives you an idea of what this class will be like except we're not going to step on the ropes and we will not have a nicer demo bike.

Registration is still open for this class - several spots still available! You know you want to hang out with KessmanN... the only question is "Why Aren't You?"

If that's not enough, consider the option of having to leave your beloved boat pinned and ravaged by the river while you wait days for the water to recede vs. having the knowledge and practical experience to get it out so you can get right back to doing what you love - PADDLING IT!

So if you don't know how to do this:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/27340091@N08/6727632045/" title="kayak pin by slo2rol, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7154/6727 ... 3860d1.jpg" width="500" height="332" alt="kayak pin"></a>

or this:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/27340091@N08/6727631897/" title="Canoe pin by slo2rol, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7030/6727 ... 122a8d.jpg" width="500" height="338" alt="Canoe pin"></a>

Then this might be what you recover:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/27340091@N08/6727571009/" title="Uh oh by slo2rol, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7021/6727 ... 15e5df.jpg" width="374" height="500" alt="Uh oh"></a>

But, if you took this class, this could be you:

Right on. See, Jon knows where the cool kids are going to be Saturday afternoon. There's even time to bag some LJ laps before class if you're worried about missing the river that day.

Z Drag Class

I was coming to the class, but with the competent paddler diagram, cool video, and neat pics I don't think I need the class now. Just kidding, will see everyone tomorrow.

Even the pros (correction "especially the pros") pin boats. They just edit that stuff out of the "kayaking porn."

Dave & Brandon, you'll be glad to know that Tom and I put our knowledge to good use on Saturday on the Maury river just below Indian Pool. Someone in another group pinned a boat against two trees near the bank. We used our z-drag to pull out his boat. He was very grateful and fairly impressed. Fortunately everyone was OK and the only carnage was a lost paddle.

I heard about this on the Sunday afternoon LJ run... I was smiling like a proud father!!! Glad you guys took the class, had the gear, and knew what to do to help a fellow boater out of a jam! Good job out there and keep up the good work!!!
