Balcony Saturday/Sunday

Post by jdb777 »

I am taking a few beginners down Balcony Falls on Saturday and Sunday if the river level is decent enough (4-6ft). Tentatively I will meet at the put-in at 10:30, trying to get on the river 11-130 both days. Anyone want tag along?

May do the Lower Maury one of those days depending on weather and water level. Maybe picking up trash on Saturday with the rest of Coastals in Rockbridge Baths would be a good intro to Paddling etiquette

Hi Josh, I can do Balcony At 11.00 at the put in. The lower Maury is going to be too low for me.. you know about the new take out, the extra mile of flat water paddling. Lets hope it is not a windy day Dake

Sounds great Dake, and yeah guess it's a chance to get a good workout in. Going Saturday or Sunday? See you there at 11.

P.S.-Sunglasses?

Any chance you guys can let me know how the water temp is? I have some first timers that want to go next weekend but they only have wetsuits to keep them warm and I don't want them to get a bad taste for kayaking just because they were really cold.

click on a station here
http://waterdata.usgs.gov/va/nwis/current/?type=quality
and you can check water temp - usually the graph has Celsius on left and Fahrenheit on right. even if the tab form shown on the index page only has Celsius.

Paddled Balcony today with beginners. I ran with just an NRS hydroskin shirt and swimming trunks, Beginners ran with wetsuits and a couple had splash tops.

It's a bit nippy, but nothing too uncomfortable as long as the sun is shining and temp is in 70's you should be fine with gear you have.
