O.C.T. 6/15 & 16 - ***CANCEL NRG & SWITCH TO GOSHEN

Post by Alicia »

***THERE ARE TOO MANY VARIABLES FOR ME TO RUN THIS TRIP IN WV WITH WV GAUGES GOING STRAIGHT UP. SO I'M FALLING BACK ON GOSHEN PASS FOR SAT., 6/15. MEET @ NOON @ THE ROCKBRIDGE BATHS POST OFFICE ON RT. 39. PLEASE DON'T BLOCK ACCESS TO THE P.O. PLEASE LET ME KNOW YOU'RE COMING. WE GOT RAIN TODAY SO I'M HOPING THE RIVER WILL BUMP UP A BIT OR @ LEAST HOLD CLOSE TO THE CURRENT LEVEL, WHICH IS GOOD FOR QUALIFIED 1ST TIMERS. TOO EARLY TO PREDICT FOR SUNDAY, I'M AFRAID.

THANKS, ALICIA

I first ran the NRG on a Nate Houser Coastals trip (1987?!?) so thought it was time to offer another club trip mid-summer. Here's the AW link to the Gorge:

http://www.americanwhitewater.org/conte ... l/id/2418/

If you're comfortable on the Lower James or playing on the Lower Yough, then this might be a good trip for you. A roll or self-rescue is helpful in the big water. My hope is the level will be below 3', otherwise, I may have to consider cancelling it.

We'll meet @ 12 noon @ the NRG Visitor Center on Rt 19 just north of Fayetteville & the New River Gorge bridge. We'll shuffle boats & run shuttle from there.

We'll camp @ Ray's Campground Sat night. No reservations required unless you want to rent a cabin. See here for directions & rates:

http://www.rayscampground.com/

On Sunday, we'll plan to leave camp by 10am to run the gorge again.

Please let me know if you're coming - I need some veterans if there are going to be many first-timers. Also, please feel free to ask questions here or contact me by PM below or email in the roster.

Looking forward to it!

Alicia,

That gauge in your link, is that the same as the old visitors center one?

Why do I have a sudden craving for apple-flavored minicell?

(Hiya Marshall.)

Yes, it's the Fayette Station gauge - same as the one listed @ the Visitor Ctr, correlated for us by AW.

Come on out & join us, Marshall!

Apple flavored minicel is teh best.

I may join you guys, getting back into it and need to get a few more downtown runs in to remember what end of the paddle to use.

BUMP

Post by Alicia »

Just giving this thread a bump, so folks can be planning a week ahead for a road trip. Also, Amphibious is still looking for a ride from RVA.

thanx,
Alicia Jahsmann

Hard to say what this weekend might bring. The NRG is 6' & rising. As I said in my original post, I would not be comfortable coordinating a trip there over 3' (& would prefer 2'). The Cranberry's running now but it's only Monday so it may likely be gone by the wkend. Of course, the Maury is booming now & more rain forecast here on Thurs.

So, stay tuned & we'll just have to see what's up (literally) by Thurs pm.

thanx, Alicia

Hey Alicia -

Father/son duo from DC here (not quite a duo actually, we're in K1s). We're going to be in the Richmond Area this weekend looking to explore beyond the James. If you guys run the New or the Maury we'd love to join. We're both III/IV boaters with solid combat rolls and rescue skills. And we will likely have room for 1 extra in our vehicle.

Cheers,

Garrick

CHANGE OF VENUE

Post by Alicia »

Hi, Garrick - thanx for posting.

To all - well, it's pretty obvious the New Gorge is too high for this trip.

I'm watching the fruitbasket area in WV - Cranberry, Cherry (& tribs), Williams. These would be class 3-4 creeks. There could also be options on the top Gauley (above the lake). There is chance of storms Thurs but doubt much rain. Levels are dropping but might hold.

Then there is always the fall back of staying close for the Maury.

I've only had limited interest/commitment from folks, so I don't have a good idea of who might want to still go now that it's not the NRG.

Are the following still interested? Amphibious, Scott W., Marshall, Katie? Sounds like possibly Doug L. & Garrick are (& Ken).

While I will post again Thurs PM, things could still change on Friday, or even Sat AM, so please make sure I have your contact info if you want to join the trip.

Thanks, Alicia

Still interested in something new in III-IV range (new would be anything but Lower James!)

Hey Alicia!
A group of 3-5 from Raleigh are interested in joining...none of us have run the Maury yet, but everyone's solid. Think you have room for us if the level stays runnable?

Alicia, I'm a firm maybe for tomorrow! May (likely) need to get out at Indian Pool on account of the wedding we are attending later in the evening. Will let you know for certain Saturday morning.
