Sat, April 19 - Rockbridge Baths section of Maury

Post by Jenny »

Steve is coordinating a trip on this section on Sunday. Let's make it a "twofer." I'd like to paddle the section on Sat, too. If you'd like to join me, post or send pm by Thurs evening.

Might be a few of us up for RB on down on Saturday

Post by dkeller »

Might be 3 - 4 of us up for a run down from RB on the Maury. Weather looks good for Saturday. Sunday probably not good with Easter.

Will know more Thursday evening.

Any thoughts on time to meet?

Down to Copper Road or bridge?

Planning to meet at 11 am at Rockbridge Baths near the PO. Put in will be there or at Indian Pools if there is interest. Take out will be Copper Road or lower take-out, again dependent upon interest of the group. Hope to see you there.

Maury..ledges to copper rd Saturday

Post by Dake »

From the ledges down to Copper rd,but when the rest of the river is full this section because it is so wide gets bony. There is a put in above lava falls{which is a hoot] so we can catch a few rapids above the P.O.Are you meeting at P.O.,and then backtracking to copper rd,Lets hope the water doesn't drop fast..Dake If so,what time can we meet you at copper rd??

Looks like 5 of us on saturday. We will have two 14 year olds who have easy class 2 experience but that should be ok based on level and my distant memory of this run. Doing lava falls would be great. Rest of us are experienced. All on Torrent SOT's. Thanks

Maury

Post by Dake »

It should be around 800 cfs on Saturday. At this level Lava is a 3,but harmless.Other rapids will be 2+, but harmless.Big waves and holes...The water will be very cold still... I don't want to hijack Ginny's trip, but would love to meet later, like noon. Should be up to 60 by then....

Lower Maury on Saturday

Post by dkeller »

We are hoping for 1000+ cfs but will run whatever the level.

I am sticking with Jenny whenever she runs as I signed up with her first but 11am or noon is fine with us. We have 3 hour drive so will shift as needed.

I am thinking it will be pretty warm and sunny by the time we get on (which will likely be close to noon anyway I am guessing once we set shuttle, etc.)

Just post final plans on Friday.

We are planning to be at PO at 11am. Is that also where the store is or at least was. Has been a few years since I paddled the Maury, upper or lower.

Thanks. Looking forward to first paddle of the season.

We will be meeting at 11 am at the store/PO (yes, they are the same location). Please be respectful of store owners and park on the other side of Rt. 39. Dake, I think it will probably be around noon by the time we unload and get down to Copper Road so you can meet us there if you would like. I would rather keep the put in meeting time at 11 am, though, so that we will have plenty of time on the river.

I have never run above the bridge (Indian Pools section), but have been wanting to do so for quite a while. If someone in the group has done it and is willing to show others the route, we could start there (or some of us could start there). Otherwise, we'll start at the store (or one rapid up with put in on the other side of the river). So far, we have 8 paddlers and a shuttle runner. Should be a good day.

I am leaving for Lexington tomorrow morning and may not have access to email after tomorrow morning. If you need to reach me, best to call my cell: 804-three eight zero-4728. See you on Sat.

I think level will be closer to 1200 - 1400 based on current rate of drop.

I still think section is fairly benign at those levels.

I am only concerned about younger ones but still all plan to be there. We will make sure we show them the lines and guide them down any rapids that may be a bit tougher than class 2.

I'll plan to join y'all Saturday, 11 am. Will be a pretty day.

Dake, I'll be bringing something for you from a previous outing.

If there is sufficient support from the group and the water level, I'd be glad to start at Indian Pool or Ledges. But I'll defer to the wants and needs of the group.

Looking forward to it ...
Grateful for the gift of some serious fun ...

Jenny,

I'd like to join the group for Saturday, and my buddy Kurt Sisson will probably join us, too.

We've run the Indian Pools to R. Baths a number of times, and it should be good at this level if the group wants to do it. If not, R. Bath to Copper Road is always fun.

Don your comment: "1200 - 1400 based on current rate of drop. " confuses me. currently (Friday AM) the Rockbridge Baths gage is 838 cfs.

Sorry, wrong Maury gauge

Post by dkeller »

Sorry about that.

I did not realize which gauge was being shown at AWA for section below Rockbridge Baths. I missed that it was the Buena Vista Gauge and not the one that was correct which is the one at RB.

Sorry for the confusion. Told you it has been a while since I was up that way. : )

Been paddling in WV a lot these past few years.

Still plan to be at PO at 11am.

My cell is 757-92seven-02nine1

Thanks.

Don.
