O.C.T. Sat. 3/25 Goshen Pass Clean-up, Paddle, & Cookout
Please mark your calendars for this umpteenth annual good time!
We'll meet @ the Rockbridge Baths P.O. on Rt. 39 on Sat, 3/25/17, @ 10am. Please park across from, NOT in front of or adjacent to the P.O. I'll have orange vests & trash bags. Then we'll drive upstream, stagger our parking, & pick up all the trash we can alongside Rt. 39 & down towards the river where possible. Please bring gloves. I also recommend long pants & long sleeves due to poison ivy. About noon, we'll head back to my house in RB for a cookout, courtesy of Coastals.
In past years, we've been fortunate to have enough water to then run 1 or 2 sections of the Maury - the Pass [Advanced], Indian Pools down [intermediate] &/or below the P.O. [low intermediate]. Fingers crossed for water again this year. If not, Balcony Falls is always available as a back-up (35 minute drive from RB).
To help with my shopping list for the cookout, PLEASE LET ME KNOW BY THURSDAY, 3/23, IF YOU ARE COMING. However, if you decide to come @ the last minute, you'll still be quite welcome, but I won't be able to promise you a big lunch.
Thanks in advance for helping with this worthwhile event - last year we had 17 volunteers & collected 26 bags of trash. While I hope there's less trash this year, it'd be great to have even more volunteers.
Please note the Pass trip will be putting in @ the swinging bridge, which is a Wildlife Management Area & requires a DGIF access permit or fishing or hunting license. See here for info: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/access-permit/ and http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/licenses/
Hope to see you 3/25! Alicia

UPDATE w/ new Plan B
The clean-up is this Saturday! Please let me know if you're coming by this Thursday so I can shop for the cookout on Friday. We'll meet @ the Rockbridge Baths P.O. on Rt. 39 @ 10am. Please park across from, NOT in front of or adjacent to the P.O.
The temps are looking warm for Sat., but unfortunately the river is not cooperating as well. Barring a change in the forecast, it's not looking likely that we'll have water in the Maury to paddle. There is a slim chance of bumping down below the P.O., but you would want a beater-boat. I know I posted that a Plan B would be Balcony Falls. I'd like to offer another Plan B: a nice hike from across the swinging bridge (@ the P/I), downstream then up to an incredibly lovely view of the Pass from a rock out-cropping.
Please remember that the swinging bridge is a Wildlife Management Area & requires a DGIF access permit or fishing or hunting license. See here for info: http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/access-permit/ and http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/licenses/ .
Folks would certainly still be welcome to head to Balcony after the cookout - it's 35 minutes to Glasgow P/I.
See you Saturday - thanks!

Thanks to all who are planning to come!
Just wanted to mention that the Lower Maury (below the P.O.) is just below minimum (1.8' USGS), & not dropping very quickly. Given that it's gonna be a 70 degree day, some folks might not mind a slightly lower than minimum run there. Ken thinks you'd have to get out of your boat 2x.
So now there are 3 Plan B's! Balcony Falls, hike up in the Pass, and ELF run below the P.O. Come prepared & be flexible!
