Russell Fork, Upper and Lower (Gorge) Oct. 4-6

Post by billh1970 »

The Russell Fork is located in Breaks, VA. The Upper Russell Fork is the section above the Class V gorge and the Lower Russell Fork is the section below the gorge. The put in for the Upper is below the John W. Flannagan Dam on the Pound River with a couple miles of the Pound before it confluences with the Russell Fork. Take out for the Upper is at Garden Hole, which is also the put in for the gorge. Put in for the Lower is at the take out for the gorge and take out for the Lower is in Elkhorn City, KY. There is camping and Lodge rooms in the park.

For Friday to run the Lower, let's meet at 2:00 at the top of the access road to Ratliffe Hole along the highway.

Meet at the Rhododendron Lodge and Restaurant in the Breaks Interstate Park on Saturday morning, Oct 5 at 10 am. Plan is to run the Upper, putting on at the dam. Usually some want to run the Lower after the Upper trip.

On Sunday we will put on at Bartlick on the Russell Fork for an abbreviated trip on the Upper. Meeting time and place is the same as Saturday.

The Breaks Interstate Park has some news on their facebook page following the storm that passed through the area.

The whitewater releases are on. Garden Hole and Ratliffe Hole are clear and ready for use by boaters.

The lodge has been housing utility workers that are visiting to restore power in the neighboring areas of Virginia and Kentucky. The plan is for them to stay through Thursday night, so if you have a reservation there there might be an issue.

The campground does not have power as of Wednesday afternoon, however should be fixed by Thursday morning. The other areas of the park do have power.

I'm making the trip.
