Goshen Pass CLEANUP, Cookout & Paddle 3/29 OCT

Post by Alicia »

Please join us for this annual good karma event! Coastals has been doing some version of this for over 30 years!
You supply the labor, the river gods hopefully supply some water and the club supplies the cookout (with a nod to my farmer neighbor who donates the burger).

We'll meet @ the Rockbridge Baths P.O. on Rt. 39 on Saturday, 3/29, @ 10am. Please park across from, NOT in front of or adjacent to the P.O. I'll have orange vests & trash bags. BRING GLOVES. Then we'll drive upstream, stagger our parking, & pick up all the trash we can alongside Rt. 39 & down towards the river where possible. I recommend long pants & long sleeves due to poison ivy. About noon, we'll head back to my nearby house for lunch.

Most years, we've been fortunate to have enough water to then run 1 or 2 sections of the Maury - the Pass [Advanced], Indian Pools down [intermediate] &/or below the P.O. [low intermediate]. If not, Balcony Falls is always available as a back-up (35 minute drive from RB). Or there is hiking in the Pass.

To help with my shopping for the cookout, PLEASE LET ME KNOW BY THURSDAY, 3/27, IF YOU ARE COMING. However, if you decide to come @ the last minute, you'll still be quite welcome, I just won't be able to promise you a big lunch.

I'll post any weather/river updates closer to the 29th.

Advance thanks for helping out on this special and worthwhile event!

Thanks for organizing this Alicia! The Maury is a more beautiful place because of it.

Glad to have you all. Thanks for the thanks but it's really my pleasure. I'm lucky enough to live here & welcome the help keeping it beautiful.

Saturday's weather looks great for trash picking & picnicking. 60s in the AM & 70s in the afternoon.

Sadly, there is no real rain in the forecast so I'm afraid the Maury won't be runnable. But fear not, Balcony Falls, just 35 min away, will likely have plenty of water. And there's also hiking in the Pass.

So plan on making a day of it with paddling friends!

Gentle reminder: To help with my shopping for the cookout, PLEASE LET ME KNOW BY THURSDAY, 3/27, IF YOU ARE COMING. However, if you decide to come @ the last minute, you'll still be quite welcome, I just won't be able to promise you a big lunch.

Count me in. I'd like an update Friday on river levels, if possible, but would be OK for Balcony.

We've got a good group coming together!

And great weather - 64 degrees at 10am climbing to 80 by 4pm!

As I said earlier, the Maury River is too low this time, but Balcony Falls is a fine level (currently 1700 cfs combined Buchanan & Maury @ BV). It does make for a little longer day, but we'll try to keep things moving with the trash collecting & lunch so we aren't too late heading to Glasgow. But hey, 80 degrees in March!

Hiking is certainly an option, too.

Advance thanks to all!
