Maury (goshen pass) - anyone wants to take a first-timer?
Hey guys,
Long time since I posted here. I canceled a trip to the Beaver in NY this weekend because I'm a little sick, but should be fine by tomorrow. Looks like the Maury is running and I've had my eyes on that run for many months... Anyone would be interested in leading a first-timer down tomorrow (sunday)? I gotta work Monday so Sunday is my only option...
Thanks - email me or call me at 805-680-3580 - I may not be able to check back on the board...
Take care - have fun creeking, I saw that some stuff was going OFF in SoVA last night!
Helene.

I would also like to be a first-timer on this section but we don't know if the gauge is stuck and don't have our lookout to let us know as she's in WV.
Feel better and worst case scenario - come to the James! click here for forecast

I would be interested in the Maury from Goshen to Rockbridge Baths
hopefully we should be able to check the level in the AM
min 800cfs would be great! I've run it approx 5 times- would be happy to go with first timers
if we can't figure out the level, the James at Blacony Falls is always fun!
morning-on at 10 or 11 is best for me, as I need to be off the water by 4
feel free to phone me anytime

Where would folks meet?
I'm in DC actually, so I'm not sure where I would meet you guys for the Maury (if the Goshen section were running)... Not sure I'd drive down for the James, I do like that river and have been wanting to paddle it lately, but it seems that it's rising a lot and I'm a little shy about putting on at high water... The highest I've run the James was 6 feet, though that was a long time ago and my skills have improved since then.
Anyway - I'm totally up for the Maury if you guys are interested, just give me enough notice that I can make it from DC, and let me know where to meet. I hope we can make it happen, that would be great!

Interesting graph. Had we known Goshen Pass would spike to a runnable level Friday night we might have tried out the headlamps (kidding).
Gauge geekin' time, when the Rockbridge Baths USGS gauge stops reporting (which is pretty much every time it rains), check out
http://www.afws.net/data/va/Rockbridge.HTM
Scroll down to the bottom for the Rockbridge Baths stream gauge. It will usually be reporting. The AFWS reading will be about 0.3 feet higher than the USGS reading which, in turn, is about 1.2 feet higher than the visual gauge at the bridge. (Note: These relationships can change from time to time.)
Translation: 700 cfs = 1.5 feet at the bridge = 2.7 feet USGS = 3.0 feet AFWS (all things being approximate). This is a reasonable zero for Goshen Pass. It can be run lower but it gets scrapey and some things become more difficult.
We glanced at the bridge gauge Saturday a.m. on our way to WV and saw it was running around a foot. Had it been 1.5 feet or higher we would have phoned someone to post a level on the board.
Have fun, be safe,
Ken Dubel
