For those poor souls stuck here in Virginia with NO water -- HA! Even at -1.5 ft. the New River Gorge is still way more fun than anything else I've paddled. Over the course of the weekend I only hit one rock. Try that on the James. I know you're killing yourselves for not going, but you can take consolation in the fact that the weather was wonderful, the company was congenial, the food was fabulous, the beer was bountiful, and -- well you get the picture.
The lamest excuse I heard for not going was that someone had to stay home and "brush her cats." The best excuse I heard for not going was traveling to the Upper Yough instead. Yous are both on notice that neither of those is going to work again. You'll have to come up with something better.
Back to the trip report...
So, I hit this rock and flipped. Right after JR hit it and flipped. Gromit hit it right after I did, and flipped. Since I'm writing the trip report you can guess the outcome. I gather the rock is called "invisible rock." It's at the end of Bloody Nose rapid. At the bottom, TLQA says "You know, you can go a little farther left through there." So the next day, here we go again, only this time Gromit is directly behind JR with me trailing. I think we should rename the rock "JR Magnet" because sure enough he went right for it. Luckily he didn't flip this time, and Gromit and I were able to follow TLQA's sage advice and get a bit further left.
I think it's a good bet Wallace and Gromit will make the next New River Rendezvous. And I think the rest of Coastals should mark it on the calendar as well.
Thanks to Ken Dubel for keeping Coastals involved in this event, and for hearding all the bewildered paddlers in the right direction for shuttles.
Thanks to Andy Lee for putting the Upper New trips together.
And last but not least thanks JR for showing us the lines on the gorge. It was super cool to finally clean Lower Keeny on Sunday. That alone made the trip worthwhile.
