I paddled a George twice...

Let us know how it went! Swim confessions and carnage reports are welcome, but it's not fair to tell on your buddies!

I paddled a George twice...

Post by Wallace »

then I had to see a doctor.

For those poor souls stuck here in Virginia with NO water -- HA! Even at -1.5 ft. the New River Gorge is still way more fun than anything else I've paddled. Over the course of the weekend I only hit one rock. Try that on the James. I know you're killing yourselves for not going, but you can take consolation in the fact that the weather was wonderful, the company was congenial, the food was fabulous, the beer was bountiful, and -- well you get the picture.

The lamest excuse I heard for not going was that someone had to stay home and "brush her cats." The best excuse I heard for not going was traveling to the Upper Yough instead. Yous are both on notice that neither of those is going to work again. You'll have to come up with something better.

Back to the trip report...

So, I hit this rock and flipped. Right after JR hit it and flipped. Gromit hit it right after I did, and flipped. Since I'm writing the trip report you can guess the outcome. I gather the rock is called "invisible rock." It's at the end of Bloody Nose rapid. At the bottom, TLQA says "You know, you can go a little farther left through there." So the next day, here we go again, only this time Gromit is directly behind JR with me trailing. I think we should rename the rock "JR Magnet" because sure enough he went right for it. Luckily he didn't flip this time, and Gromit and I were able to follow TLQA's sage advice and get a bit further left.

I think it's a good bet Wallace and Gromit will make the next New River Rendezvous. And I think the rest of Coastals should mark it on the calendar as well.

Thanks to Ken Dubel for keeping Coastals involved in this event, and for hearding all the bewildered paddlers in the right direction for shuttles.

Thanks to Andy Lee for putting the Upper New trips together.

And last but not least thanks JR for showing us the lines on the gorge. It was super cool to finally clean Lower Keeny on Sunday. That alone made the trip worthwhile.

The links worked while I was putting the post together. I don't know why they don't work now.

Try this http://www.leisuresportsphoto.com/ instead. go to 'private boaters', then select the date 9/1/07 or 9/2/07 and look for group #253 both days. Enjoy the show. That white stuff you see in the pictures is water. You should try getting out there on it instead of sitting in the basement.

This came out of the mouth of JR - do you believe it?

Glad you guys had fun but hey guys guess what! I swam the God's Hole hole. That's right, the tunnel that you can swim down into and come out on the other side. It was pretty cool and I want to do it again with you guys. Thanks to Scott who held the rope in case I got sucked down and couldn't get out and Tom for ferrying me up to it, and Shawn for making sure I didn't drown.

Bloody Nose? Never heard of this one on the George. Do tell us more.

Great job guys!! Now you can back Gauley Fest weekend and show me the lines!
Envelope – Free stationary taken from the Marriott while on a business trip.
Snowflake address label – sent to me free and had to be used up.
Stained glass stamp – It was more then three feet away from me when I decided to get them so you know I didn’t see them clearly
Butterfly and Sunflower stickers on the back – Also free and required because the glue on the envelope was so old it no longer stuck.

What I can't believe is that NO ONE has jumped all over that beautiful set up line. I mean really! "Brush the cat?" Is that what you call it?

I'd like to see someone swim through that hole successfully before I try it. Are you game to do it again? Maybe this weekend.

It was a lot of fun. Yesterday we took an openboater down for his first time and he did great :!:

The one rock to hide from them, one rock to flip them. One rock to trick them all, and in the water swim them...

All figments of JR's overactive imagination.

YES I will do it again. This time without leaping onto the rock submerged a foot in front of it - on my knee. I may need Tom again. Anyone with a waterproof beacon light please let me know.

I went too, and had a blast! Even at low water the gorge was a lot of fun with great company! Thanks a bunch to JR for leading us down! I was behind him on day 2 but did not follow as he went straight into invisible rock! (sorry JR!). But thanks to JR, did have a great line in lower keeney! Matt, Jackie, Barb all did great and I had fun padding with everyone!
Thanks to Ken for organising and hope you enjoyed your Birthday! Alicia made some fantastic cake! :D

Julie - you were missed, but hope you cat is smooth, shiny and tangle free! (couldn't resist!) Dunno about swimming in gods hole - might have to let you go first on that one!
Now if it would just rain a little.....!
Hope to see everyone at gauleyfest!

I knew you wouldn't stoop to paddling anything below the recommended minimum. Not even the George. You should have, though. Gromit was really putting on a play clinic all day Saturday!!! BTW, are you still coordinating a trip on the Gorge at Gauley Fest?
